Suzanne | 5417 comments Pines (Wayward Pines, #1) by Blake Crouch is set in Idaho - my home state. So is Apocalypse Idaho by Rich Lundeen . Both were very good and had a sense of "What is going on!?"

message 3: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) The Chesapeake Series Collection (Chesapeak Bay Saga #1-4) by Nora Roberts

Set in Maryland and it's blue! I cheated because this is all 4 books in one but it's still one of my favorite Nora series of all time.

message 4: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3792 comments I haven't read any books set in Maryland yet, but Books Can Be Deceiving (Library Lover's Mystery, #1) by Jenn McKinlay is set on the East Coast and is one of my favorite series!

message 5: by Emily (new)

Emily | 440 comments There is a whole series of Murder Mysteries set in post-WWI Leeds, but the only one I have read is
Death of an Avid Reader (Kate Shackleton, #6) by Frances Brody
because the name was so catchy.

message 6: by Karen D (new)

Karen D | 785 comments Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1) by Susan Beth Pfeffer , set in northeast US, where I grew up. It's a post-apocalyptic book about the moon getting knocked off kilter and causing all sorts of problems.

message 7: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 194 comments Sadly, I don't think I have ever read a book that was set in Washington State. I am fixing that this year- "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" is on my list to read, but as I haven't read it, I can't recommend it just yet.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I live near SF so here are a couple set in the city:
The Poison Artist by Jonathan Moore and Obsession, Deceit, and Really Dark Chocolate (A Sophie Katz Murder Mystery, #3) by Kyra Davis (note not first book in series, but has a blue cover)

Set even closer to home --- its set on the peninsula
Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee

The Complete Tales and Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh (Winnie-the-Pooh, #1-4) by A.A. Milne was set on Ashdown Forest which is 15 mins drive away from where I grew up and am still living

The Other Boleyn Girl (The Tudor Court, #2) by Philippa Gregory also includes some scenes locally. Some of the film was shot in Hever Castle which is 5 mins away.

This has made me realise how much stuff there is locally! Roger Hargreaves who wrote the Mr Men/Little Miss books (another recommendation for anyone with children) lived in the village as well.

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 808 comments I HAVE to recommend this book: The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller
My mom, brother, and I went on a small road trip to visit Winterset (where John Wayne was born) and decided to visit this specific covered bridge nearby call the Roseman Bridge. My mom told me about how there was a book talking about this bridge and I read it on the drive to the bridge. It was such a cool experience to be reading the book, then getting there and seeing all the descriptions fall into place. The book is fictional, but it didn't lessen the impact. Let me see if I can find a picture....

Rip Tides (Lei Crime, #9) by Toby Neal Another good mystery set in Hawaii

The Flaming Luau of Death (Madeline Bean, #7) by Jerrilyn Farmer Simply hysterical!!

Povídky z jedné kapsy; Povídky z druhé kapsy by Karel Čapek.
A lovely collection of short stories set in the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia) in the 1920s.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I'm from Lisbon, Portugal and my rec is: Codex 632 (Tomás Noronha, #1) by José Rodrigues dos Santos .

It's the first book of a great series, from one of the best Portuguese authors of the moment.

And don't be too quick in thinking it' a Da Vinci Code rip-off, because it is not *giggles*

message 20: by Imagination (new)

Imagination Meg (imaginationmeg) | 60 comments I'm from California and I'm going to recommend Island of the Blue Dolphins (Island of the Blue Dolphins, #1) by Scott O'Dell (it's based on an island of the coast of California). It is a really awesome book and I recommend it to kids, teens, and adults. It will really open your eyes to some things.

message 21: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Seattle, WA, USA:

Boneshaker (The Clockwork Century, #1) by Cherie Priest - alternate history book that takes place during the civil war. A scientist tried to drill for oil and ended up releasing the blight, a gas that turns people into zombies. It's really cool to read as they actually use historic streets and I recognize the places they talk about.

Bloodshot (Cheshire Red Reports, #1) by Cherie Priest - Vampire with a twist. She's a world renowned theif. When she's approached to steal government documents she starts to find out about these strange blood experiments. It's pretty awesome.

*Dawn (x1f4dadawnx1f4da) | 191 comments Washington State:
East of the Mountains by David Guterson Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson After by Amy Efaw

On my TBR, but my 16yo son just read this and loved it so I feel confident in recommending it also. It is also on our local county's "Reads" list (the whole county reads the same book at the same time) with a visit by the author at the end.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

My home state of South Dakota:
The Personal History of Rachel DuPree by Ann Weisgarber
