In the small rural counties of Florida (which is over half of the 67 counties) I think there are large pockets still stuck in the past and occasionally you see some of the ugliness come out in how minorities are treated, even by officials. BUT, I am quite sure it's immensely better than it was even a generation ago. I think eventually, maybe in another generation, the rest of the South will catch up with its more progressive parts. But, then again, ugliness can happen anywhere at anytime and, I think, from anyone, so life is a constant struggle to be on your guard to do the right thing.
I think the big turning point came in the eighties when it suddenly became unpopular to throw around racist terms, as in the PC-movement. Words are powerful. Words, both positive and negative, can change the heart from the inside out. Being truly PC isn't about white-washing problems superficially. It's about changing a culture of bad language and the thoughts and actions that go along with bad language. God help us.

Thank you Matthew! I've been trying really hard to not use labels like "black", "latino", "white" etc. We've been in such a habit of including that in a description of a person and when you don't include it, people have trouble identifying who you're talking about. I agree that we need culture change.

I agree that this book is getting harder and harder to read. I have to put it down pretty often because I am so upset. Many of these things happened during my lifetime; and, while I am horrified by the prejudice and evil, I can only say (not defending any of it!) that these were normal procedures. That's the way things were. If you were raised to believe the color of your skin made you superior/inferior, it would be hard to act differently.

I have no sympathy or understanding whatsoever for Norma. I think she lied out of pure-dee meanness!"
You are so right. I agree with you. It is so disturbing to read about this because it happened.

Oh, good! I'm not the only one. :)

Response to Teri on Norma
(view spoiler)[Yes, but for what exactly? She had to eyes and a brain. I know I might be to harsh on her and that it is not this day and age, but neither was it the Middle ages. What bugs me the most was how King described her in the courtroom. She was cold (for lack of a better word). I would like to think that, if you were coerced to do something, you would at least show some kind of an emotion that might tell the others that you are not exactly telling the truth, but she was either a very good actress, or she just didn't care.
