Samanta (almacubana) Perhaps you are right. You give her the benefit of a doubt, which I can't (probably because human rights are a sore spot for me and I am becoming too emotionally invested in this story). You are a better person than I am, Teri.

Matthew Response to Robyn's "For those of you down south - what do you think? Are we getting to be more open-minded where you are? "
In the small rural counties of Florida (which is over half of the 67 counties) I think there are large pockets still stuck in the past and occasionally you see some of the ugliness come out in how minorities are treated, even by officials. BUT, I am quite sure it's immensely better than it was even a generation ago. I think eventually, maybe in another generation, the rest of the South will catch up with its more progressive parts. But, then again, ugliness can happen anywhere at anytime and, I think, from anyone, so life is a constant struggle to be on your guard to do the right thing.

I think the big turning point came in the eighties when it suddenly became unpopular to throw around racist terms, as in the PC-movement. Words are powerful. Words, both positive and negative, can change the heart from the inside out. Being truly PC isn't about white-washing problems superficially. It's about changing a culture of bad language and the thoughts and actions that go along with bad language. God help us.

Thank you Matthew! I've been trying really hard to not use labels like "black", "latino", "white" etc. We've been in such a habit of including that in a description of a person and when you don't include it, people have trouble identifying who you're talking about. I agree that we need culture change.

Teri (teriboop) Very well said Matthew.

message 261: by Tomi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tomi | 161 comments One thing that just struck me is how in several instances (pgs. 187 and 188) it was college students who saw the wrong in segregation and supported the efforts of the NAACP. When I read today about all the college kids whining about needing "safe spaces" because of something written -in chalk! - on the sidewalk, I am amazed at how different young people have become...
I agree that this book is getting harder and harder to read. I have to put it down pretty often because I am so upset. Many of these things happened during my lifetime; and, while I am horrified by the prejudice and evil, I can only say (not defending any of it!) that these were normal procedures. That's the way things were. If you were raised to believe the color of your skin made you superior/inferior, it would be hard to act differently.
