I am a messy reader, I always have several books on the go. Usually I read a mixture of genres and styles parallel: one or two novels, a short story collection, some poetry, essays, other non-fiction...

A little late on responding but I'm a one book at a time reader.... wish I could read several but I feel it's distracting for me ... wish I could read more though
I have never tried two, or more, books at the same time O__O It somehow feels disrespectful to the book I'm reading -it's like cheating on the person you're dating! Okay, maybe I am exaggerating, hehe. I just haven't tried it. I like to have one good book and dive deep into it. But, then again, I am often reading a lot of other things for grad school (academic books, papers, researches) so, in a way, I guess a do read multiple things at the same time.
Perhaps next month I will give it a try and read two books at the same time -just to see what happens.
Normally I read one at a time, but it depends on the size of the book or if it is a hardback. I hate travelling with a huge, heavy book in my bag, so the bigger books I keep on my bedside table and then carry a smaller, lightweight book around with my in my bag. If this is the case, then I'll end up reading two at a time.
I usually have a couple going at once, but it cannot be just any books — they have a way of being complementary to each other somehow. Usually there’s a main book, a minor book (often on kindle) which I use as a diversion/palate cleanser from the main book, and my bubble-bath book, that lives in the bathroom. I never read two books with “main focus book” potential at the same time. For instance, last night I couldn’t decide if I wanted to re-read Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson, or start the third book of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. I couldn’t do both, because they are both books that deserve my full attention!
:-)
As a mood reader, I have a habit of starting more than one book at a time, if only to see what "sticks." (My currently reading on here has about 12 books listed, lol.) I try not to read more than two or three, though, at the same time.
I usually read only one book at a time. But once in a while, I will read two books at a time, only if they are completely different (example : sci fi and crime mystery).
