What do you think about the Scorpion Rules?

I am currently listening to this book and am about half way through. i am fairly ambivalent about it. It seems rather hopeless, the kids are left hostage by their families to guard against war, but war is inevitable. Not a very engaging plot. Am I missing something? Erin is a good story teller and I expected to be caught up in the story within the first chapter, yet I am not.

I've been looking forward to reading it but I haven't got to it yet. I heard her read an excerpt at an event that sounded interesting, but author readings always sound good to me. ;-)

Part of my problem with the audio book is the reader. I don't like her voice characterization. One of the female human characters talks like a synthetic voice, with lots of stutter/pauses that a person doesn't use (unless they are William Shatner).
