Mockingjay
question
Do you think the way that PTSD in the HG series is portrayed is offensive?

I haven't suffered from it, but I do have anxiety and find Katniss' portrayal of the the conditions she supposedly suffers from to be VERY offensive and hardly credible at all. In fact, I hate the Hunger Games as a whole as I find it to be overrated, cliched and a pile of literary shit - if you want to read better books, then read one by Conn Iggulden, George Orwell or Neil Gaiman.
I at least think that Collins should have put more research into the condition - but surprise surprise, I bet she hasn't gone beyond the misconseptions.
I'm hoping for answers from people who suffer from PTSD, or know someone who has it at least. And don't worry, you can still add in your own opinions even if you tick neither of these criterias. :)

Everyone suffers from mental disease different and while I found it completely ridiculous I'd have to chalk it up to fiction. Also based on the style of writing these books were meant for ages 10-16 most likely and diving deep into research I'm sure wasn't on Collins list. These books are fine for kids, engaging and entertaining with enough characters, themes and plot points to hopefully further their reading skills.
"A Pile of Literary Shit"? Damn that's funny!
I am not really sure of the PTSD portrayal was offensive, exactly, but I don't think it was particularly accurate either.
Still, it's a fiction so I didn't get too pissed off about it.

It's wasn't that great, but it's still better than most YA books. I'd rather have an author attempt PTSD and maybe miss the mark than have her characters constantly undergo trauma and suffer no mental consequences.
Is this a book rant or an inquiry about the portrayal of mental illness in the books? What is offensive about the portrayal to you and what do you think would have made it better? Did they say she has PTSD in the books? I seriously don't remember. I feel like no, but I'm not sure.

As you can probably gather from my profile picture, which was from the Iraq 03' invasion, I have some experience w/PTSD. I personally have only experienced a symptom or two, so I don't consider myself to suffer from PTSD nor have I ever been evaluated. Now I have many friends who have suffered and been diagnosed, and I have even lost a good friend and mentor to his battle w/PTSD.
With that being said, I don't find her portrayal of Katniss suffering from PTSD offensive, but it is bad...really BAD and as you stated, its hardly credible. I think you hit it spot on...."Collins should have put more research into the condition." You can tell she wrote it based on misconceptions
But I must admit that I am a little bias since I share your same opinion on this series. It is "a pile of literary crap" lol. I really don't know how I made it through all 3 books...ESPECIALLY the hot mess that is the 3rd book.
