What Are You Currently Reading? (doesn't have to be an Aussie book) - Part 2

Sharon wrote: "I’m glad it’s not just me, Brenda. I must say I quite enjoyed Alice’s character in A Life Of Her Own, but in this one she is frustrating me no end lol. Well only 50 more pages to go :)"
I'll be interested to read your review Sharon :)

I am really enjoying it, but I am permanently hovering on the edge of amazement that this book never won any awards. It is a small imprint, maybe that is it.
The main timeline is the author living in Sydney, small stories from his day to day life there; and he is an avid reader, so the bookshops of Sydney are a feature. Interspersed are side stories, about diverse things based on his reading, Ern Malley the poetic hoax, exploration of the pacific ocean and lots more. I am at the moment in the body of the work where the author is tracing the (possibly mythic) land of Luca Antara, claimed to be almost exactly where the NT is...
It is a really amazing book, well written, complex and it beats the hell out of many actual award winners.

The one I have enjoyed the most of Fiona's is A Life Of Her Own but I guess that doesn't mean you would Deborah :)

Oooh I didn't realise it was a sequel! Will be interested to hear your thoughts.

It does look like a promising story, I might revisit this one when my heavy challenge schedule wanes a bit.

That's good to know Andrea, thanks. Fortunately I've read Preservation

Sorry to hear, Diana! Hope you recover quickly! Thankfully reading can be done without moving. :)
So sorry to hear that Diana, I hope you'll be okay very soon. Take it easy and rest up whilst reading :)

Get well soon Diana, and enjoy your book!

Oh no! I hope you can rest up and enjoy some good books during your convalescence.

A book that is borderline impossible to link to on GR. If I type the name, nothing. If I type the author, GR tries very hard to change it to Malcolm Glladwell. Even if I type in the ISBN, it returns no result.
Still, I persevere with linking it as well as with reading it. This book is really not what I expected, the setting is intensely Australian, I could swear the beachside community of 'Bluebird' is my own suburb and I suspect many Australian's will get exactly the same feel from it.
All the writing is replete with Australianisms in so very many ways. I am struggling with the overall sense of impeding doom though, if something bad is not happening, it is being heavily foreshadowed, or being recalled. The characters are neither relatable nor happy, though often very recognisable.
The writing is almost a visceral experience, very vivid and impressive but almost always disquieting. At the moment I would say this book is not for everyone and I am not entirely sure it is for me...

I just checked Deborah and the ISBN - 9781760877422 - is already on GR from A&U. Perhaps GR is having a bad day, but it came up for me :) Happy reading!

Yikes! Glad I didn't request this one, sounds a bit depressing!

It is an odd glitch... I hope it resolves. I kind of have to search for the author, then through the list of his books before it comes up. Ah well, just part of the joys of ARC reading - we get to sort out some of the hiccups :)

It comes and goes! At times it is pretty depressing, other times I can't stop reading. Always confrontational in one way or another though - it is really quite fascinating and the more I read it, the more I suspect that this one will win awards, or at least nominations.

This is such a complicated book to review or even decide exactly how I feel about it! I was not enjoying it that much at first but it ended up impressing me a great deal. I suspect this is one of the best books I will read this year.

I can totally relate to that feeling. Sorry you're having a tough time but glad you have this series to turn to! I've been finding a lot of solace in reading lately.
I hope the sun shines brightly on you soon Diana. :)

I am super excited for it and will be starting it right away!

Although I don't aspire to owning a farm, Jenna's books have inspired me to plant a vegie patch.

Enjoying it but wish it was not so heavy and hard to hold. My poor little hands need a frequent rest. It's a 927 page hardback.

Despite having quite a few awards and nominations I know almost no one who has read it. I am finding it.... unexpected....
It is beautifully written, which I believe is a trademark of the author. The writing has a wistful, almost mythic quality that is not at all what you would expect from a book with this title.
I had expected it to be more about Charles Darwin, but I am a third of the way through and his name has only just appeared.

That one caught me by surprise, Diana! Hope you enjoy it!

I have to say I agree with you on this one Sharon. I also have found Fiona is a bit hit and miss with her books. I've loved some and not others...
