Continuity

I've been enjoying this series and am currently reading The Possession of November Jones. One inconsistency that is baffling me is that in book one when in 1967 Bernard and Robbie are discussing ideas for getting to the bottom of the Bockhampton Road horrors Robbie seems to not remember much of who Dorothy is. Even though it was only 5 years since he proclaimed to her that he would always love and be there for her he states:
"was thinking of more in the exorcism line. What about your friend Dorothy what’s-her-name? Doesn’t she talk to dead people and that kind of thing?"
Although the jumping back and forth in time is confusing I've managed to keep things somewhat straight until this point. This completely threw me and led me to believe the author may be as confused as I am.
