Well, I didn't know but the Wiki page states that the author took the title from a composition by Toshi Ichiyanagi, Yoko Ono’s first husband. Music was another common occurrence in the book.

Pip | 1434 comments help me, someone! I made a note of a reference to an atlas of clouds somewhere in the book, but it was a library book and my note has fallen out somewhere and I can't remember the context. It had to be in the Frobisher section because his great musical work was called Cloud Atlas Sextet (and the book is a sextet of sorts). So my answer is "I don't know"!
