The book I'm looking for is in the same type of tone/style as the Eli Monpress books by Rachel Aaron, but much older. Might be out of print? It features a thief (or maybe an assassin?) caught in the act and sentenced to death, but reprieved by the king if he'll agree to accompany the king's son on a trip. The son is a fresh-faced, honest and noble knight who is easily hoodwinked. They end up being friends and of course save the kingdom. I remember a scene of the anti-hero falling from the tower at the king's castle and almost dying or something in that vein. I think the thief's name starts with N.
