Laura (lolly-pops) | 93 comments you mean witching sticks? Some districts have frowned on use of them now. I grew up with it, remember walking around with a witching stick - though I never found water. LOL

C. | 84 comments No, powwowing is healing with herbs and I believe "spells".

It was a long time ago that I read the Beverly Lewis books that featured it, but I never forgot that unique aspect.

Laura (lolly-pops) | 93 comments Oh, or Bible verses. My great grandmother/grandmother did this but I never heard of it called powwowing. Maybe I just never knew the name of it. :)

C. | 84 comments Wow, have you ever read the two books by BL with powwowing?

I believe powwowing is also called "white magic", caused controversy in Amish sects over whether it is a gift from god or the devil. Those who practice it are called "Hex-doctors" or even "witch-doctors"!

I hope I get to see the movie[documentary] Hex Hollow.

Laura (lolly-pops) | 93 comments I read all BL's books. But I think I need to go back and reread these. I don't remember them. Do you know the titles right off hand?

Yes, they are in my first post~ The Postcard, and The Crossroad. I have no idea why there is a third book as this is NOT a trilogy, since that book has absolutely nothing to do with the first two.

I am going to reread them myself[rereading The Postcard, now], but I would still like readers to suggest any other titles they know of that feature Powwowing.

Kelly Long's Ice Mountain series does not say powwowing, but she does have a healer on the mountain that cares for the community.

Also in one of Sarah Price's fairy tale books, an older woman of renown in the community deemed the family to be cursed and the community bought into it.

Laura (lolly-pops) | 93 comments Laura V Hilton has one called Healing Love that doesn't mention powwowing but does mention a healer/midwife.

Laura (lolly-pops) | 93 comments I think Suzanne Woods Fisher mentions a healer too

Stephanie | 14 comments Suzanne Woods Fisher co-wrote a novel with Mary Ann Kinsinger called Life with Lily (The Adventures of Lily Lapp Book #1) and there are chapters about powwowing. All the Lily Lapp books are wonderful-- Mary Ann was raised Amish. Her blog is wonderful, too. http://ajoyfulchaos.blogspot.com/

C. | 84 comments I just finished the wonderful ~ Life with Lily (The Adventures of Lily Lapp #1) by Mary Ann Kinsinger , and yes, it does have a chapter showing the controversy over some Amish using Powwow doctors[because some feel it is superstition, witchcraft, or from the devil], very interesting, as the whole book is a delight.
