"...the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them."

Since his debut in 1951 as The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield has been synonymous with "cynical adolescent." Holden narrates the story of a couple of days in his sixteen-year-old life, just after he's been expelled from prep school, in a slang that sounds edgy even today and keeps this novel on banned book lists. His constant wry observations about what he encounters, from teachers to phonies (the two of course are not mutually exclusive) capture the essence of the eternal teenage experience of alienation.

Started. Through four chapters. It's different to what I usually read but I like it :)

Zen | 7 comments I like it too . I.ve read the first 6 chapters , I think is Ackley is a creepy bastard and Stradlater just a moron ...But it is nice that I had the chance to re -read this :"What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it , you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it.That doesn't happen much, though."

This is my first time reading it. How long ago was it since you read it?

Through another 3 chapters. On chapter 8 atm.

Negatively speaking, Ugh. What is it with Stradlater... Can't stand his stupid personality.

Positively speaking, This books humour is on point. I love it.

Cosmic Arcata This is a great book that mentions a lot of other books that would be an interesting buddy read. One is The Thirty-Nine Steps. Salinger favorite movie was Alfred Hitchcock's movie The 39 Steps.

In the book you may find a reference to why our how or Holden found a "Good Goodbye".

Also many of you got to the end of the book where Phoebe gets on the carousel. Did any of you recognise the music that was playing?

One of the things that really bothered me about the book when i first read it was when Holden kept asking the Taxi drivers about the ducks. He didn't ask anyone else. He did think about the when he was talking to old Spenser. (Spenser coined the phrase survival of the fittest)

Everyone i write about the TCITR I come up with something new.

Here is something interesting about New York City Taxi Cabs :
By the 1920s, automobile manufacturers like General Motors and the Ford Motor Company began operating fleets. The most successful manufacturer, however, was the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company. Founded by Morris Markin, Checker Cabs produced large yellow and black taxis that became the most common taxis in New York City.

Did you know that every car in TCITR was made by General Motors? Except one, and that was an "English job."

But back to the ducks:
These Ducks were made by GENERAL MOTORS!:

So what's school got to do with it?

Maybe you should read Brave New World
