Murder by BurialStanley Casson (old green Penguin) is very good and is set on an amateur dig. Katherine Farrer The Cretan Counterfeit(1954, old green Penguin) has a background heavily linked to Crete/the Minoans. And there's an Ellis Peters set on a Roman site, which has an excellent chase scene at the end, but I can't remember the title at the moment.
