ABANDONED. Boy gets computer virtual reality game

Okay my husband is trying to remember the name of a book he read in 5th grade. He said he remembers this:

A boy sees an ad for a computer game on the Internet and buys the game because he has no friends. He gets it and it's a virtual reality version of his town. In the game, he goes to a computer store and smashes all of the computers in the store. He stops playing the game, to find out that in real life, that same crime actually happened and finds out about it the next day, but continues playing the game anyway. Towards the end of the story, he goes to his room, turns on his computer, and the guy from the video game is heading towards the boy's house, and walks up to his room.

If anyone has seen the movie Brainscan, this story has a very close storyline to that movie.
Please help us. He thinks that it was a short story. I've searched Google for hours and still have come up with nothing.
