I was hooked from page one. I have not rooted for two girls, two women so hard before. I was in love with their story from start to finish. These two strong girls who buck the system from the get go turn into lovely, strong women who I admired. My favorite part was the beginning, something about the innocence of youth that touched me. This book had it all for me; historical, emotional, engaging. I could go on and on about this book but I think you should just pick it up and read it if you haven't already. My first 5 star read for the year and sure to be a favorite.

Ooo I definitely want to get my hands on this soon now! I really enjoyed 'The Secret Life of Bees' and, after your review, am sure this one won't disappoint my expectations!
I loved that she chose to feature the Grimkë sisters. They were instrumental figures in botn the abolitionist and suffrage movements, but their names are rarely mentioned in favor of more famous activists.
I really enjoyed this book, like Sara I appreciated the inclusion of the Grimke sisters.
I agree, I was hooked from the first chapter as well. It was great that it highlighted this rarely known chapter of history.
I rated this book 4 1/2 stars but after the f2f book discussion, it was more obvious that there were flaws. Still an enjoyable read. I did like the inclusion of the Grimke sisters and I also liked the research on quilts.

I did think it definitely was flawed but apparently those flaws didn't make it into my review.

I think that if the story is really engaging sometimes, I don't notice "bad" writing, unless it is really bad. I also think that subconsciously I give extra credit for if I learn something like I did in this story as well as my Feb bookclub book (What She Left Behind)
I guess sometimes I'm critical and sometimes I'm not ;-D
I gave it 4 stars when I rated/reviewed it in May 2014. I was engaged and interested in the story, I learned something about the Grimke sisters, I really liked the way she portrayed Handful, and I liked how she incorporated real events from this period in history. I didn't think it was "bad writing" so much as I considered it was NOT excellent writing.
