AudioFile Roundtable

My first thought about books in verse are epics like The Iliad and The Aeneid. Candace brings us five other suggestions. Here are two I'm going to check out.
The first one Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough and read by Xe Sands is intriguing as I love the work of the Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi whom the book is about. Here's the review and a sound clip http://bit.ly/2L2DKSk
The second is the 2018 Earphones Award Winning performance of The Poet X written and read by Elizabeth Acevedo. We have a review and sound clip, of course http://bit.ly/2sR9Zwt
What novels in verse are you listening to? We'd love to know.
Happy Listening!

This and other audio books are reviewed in our magazine and available in our online newsletters. You can subscribe here https://www.audiofilemagazine.com/ema... and get the reviews in your e-mail box.
I hope your afternoon is filled with wonderful audio books.

We've just announced the newest Golden Voices, the most amazing talented audio book performers in the industry.

AudioFile bestows the highest honor in audiobook narration to voice artists who have made significant contributions to the audiobook art form. Five new recipients of this lifetime honor are January Lavoy, Edoardo Ballerini, Bahni Turpin, Suzanne Toren, and Johnny Heller. These five amazing artists join the other icons of audiobook narration.
Golden Voices will be celebrated in June 2019 Audiobook Month, with 30 Days of Golden Voices including podcast interviews and features for AudioFile's audiences.
There are quite a number of Golden Voices I love to listen to, including my favorites George Guidall, Scott Brick, and Simon Vance, to name a few. The newest "Golden Voices" deserve all the accolades they will receive.

As you know, the honorific of "Golden Voice" is granted to those vocal performers who "demonstrated unparalleled excellence in the art of translating books from page to audio." Dion was granted that designation in 2007. Of course, he's gone on to win numerous Earphones Awards for his performances including "Broca's Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science" written in 1974 by Carl Sagan, recorded in 2018 by Dion Graham. The 2018 review and a sound clip are here: http://bit.ly/2MP18Zb
One of my favorite performances by Dion is "Trombone Shorty" by Troy Andrews, where he won another Earphones Award. This one is lots of fun for the music and is perfect for children of all ages. Just listen to the sound clip and review for another taste of Dion's magical narrating style http://bit.ly/2wSWm1F
Fortunately, Dion keeps performing delighting listeners of all ages. Here's a listing of his works to date. https://www.audiofilemagazine.com/gol...
Hope you can find something to stick in your ear this weekend!

Happy Listening

I can't wait for the next book in the Diviners series! January is a favorite narrator I will always pick the audiobook when she is narrating. I first discovered her in the book Dollbaby

I don’t remember when I first encountered January LaVoy as narrator, but I must agree that she’s incredibly talented. I just love her characterizations and the pacing of her narration.
After listening to the “Behind the Mic” interview this morning and then the sound clip for the Diviners, I’ve put the trilogy on my TBL( To Be Listened to) List.
Does anyone else have a favorite LaVoy performance? We’d love to know.
Miriam

Mainly she narrates:
• Ken Follett
• James Patterson
• Star Wars
• Karen Kingsbuty
• Glenn Beck
> unfortunately I dont like them so much, but
Some audibles like Decter Palmer‘s Version Control seem interesting...

If you have a favorite narrator, you can search by them at AudioFile Magazine and read reviews by our seasoned reviewers. You can also read featured articles and interviews by many of these same narrators. Here's the link: http://www.audiofilemagazine.com

Full cast means lots of voices and a variety of sound effects. I just love this type of audio book. Here are two titles that will get any teen excited about returning to school.

Try these and all the rest and enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

Angela Dawe's performance of Nalini Singh's audio books is stellar. She takes on the paranormal, changelings (like werewolves) and the normal. Dawe's sultry voice is perfect for performing all the different species' conversations.
Check out the review of Angela Dawe's Earphones Award winning performance of Nalini Singh's Wolf Rain (Book 3 in the Psy-Changeling series) http://bit.ly/2kg2uyF

Here's a sound clip of Jason Culp's Earphones Award winning performance Emma Donoghue's
Akin http://bit.ly/2lCl1p9
Having just finished reading Akin, I'm looking forward to the audio performance. As Jason Culp emphasizes in his video piece, it's the dialogue between the grouchy old man and the savvy, sassy eleven year old that makes this a wonderful story.

There's not only an interview with Michael Kramer where he answers questions about being a narrator, but also descriptions of five of his performances. Michael's descriptions of how he works, how he narrates, and his advice will inspire you to check out his lengthy audiography.
Candace has picked great examples of Michael's work. I'm going to highlight three.
Warrior of the Altaii written by Robert Jordan, published posthumously in 2019 forty years after it was written. This early story of The Wheel of Time series is read by Michael Kramer. Take a look at this review which will whet your appetite for the entire series ably read by Michael Kramer (and Kate Reading) http://bit.ly/2rb6i7c
Recorded in 2015, The Grace of Kings: The Dandelion Dynasty #1 written by Ken Liu is also read by Michael Kramer. We have a sound clip for you to check out while reading the review of the first installment of this fantasy series http://bit.ly/37oLDgF
Kramer also reads nonfiction as we hear him read Astoria: John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson's Lost Pacific Empire: A Story of Wealth, Ambition, and Survival written in 2014 by Peter Stark. Read the review and listen to the sound clip http://bit.ly/2QDD3Vw
As always, we hope you take the time to read the interview and check out all the reviews. We'd love to know which title narrated by Michael Kramer is your favorite.

Can’t say which Kramer book is my favorite — I’ve listened to a bunch of them. The Dandelion Dynasty books, Wheel of Time, Way of Kings et al. Lots!
Gotta correct your spelling, though: it’s Kate Reading, not Redding — though she pronounces it as Redding. Kinda like Guidall and Guidell — they like to keep us on our toes!

Multicast performances feature two or more narrators who read their own chapters or from their assigned character’s point of view. These performances are different from “Full cast” which are more like radio dramas or plays.
Here are two that sound interesting.
Apple, Tree: Writers on Their Parents, edited by Lisa Funderburg, read by Robin Miles, Elisabeth Rodgers, Kevin Kenerly, Kyla Garcia, Steven Jay Cohen, Dara Rosenberg, Janet Song, Bronson Pinchot, and Feodor Chin. Read the review of this 2019 compilation here: http://bit.ly/2ORLUks
This narrating duo, Tiya Sircar and Michael Crouch, read “Yes No Maybe So” written by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed. The review includes a sound clip http://bit.ly/373Viba
Which of the five multicast audio books Candace recommends are you going to listen to? Curious ears want to know

We understand that narrators are a personal preference. We do our best to focus on the performance and not the content of the audio books themselves.
Thanks for sharing your listening pleasure and preferences with us.
AFM
