Here's an article about the cost of editing, and why it can vary so much.

J.M. Rankin (jmrankin) | 64 comments Great article, Lin. A must read for all authors just starting out, or those trying to understand why editing fees vary so much. I've always tried to keep rates reasonable, but as you say we editors have bills to pay and businesses to run. I studied to become an editor and proofreader and have several years experience under my belt, which I feel is worth the money I charge. I wouldn't expect another skilled worker, an electrician for example, to work for nothing (and would never trust one who did!). I am also a published author, yet would rather pay a little extra for a professional edit than entrust my novel, which has taken me months to plan and write, to someone who is not going to polish it to a professional level.

Nicki Markus (nickijmarkus) Absolutely agree, JM.
Like you, I am both author and editor (with qualifications in editing and publishing). I got paid a pittance for some early work I did for a small online publisher (now disbanded). At that time I had a day job too, so I looked upon it as experience.
Now, though, I work exclusively as a freelance editor and writer and I can't afford to undersell myself. I keep my rates within the range I see others charging and I will negotiate with indie authors who often have limited funds, but no editor worth their salt can afford to work for nothing, nor should they be expected to do so. As is often the case, you get what you pay for. Most editors offer a sample page or two so authors can see what they will be getting for their money.
