Michelle (MichellesBookishLife) (thebookishlibrarian) Hi guys! I am reading through a bunch of series as my first reading goal for this year. My question is, which series should I read first? Mortal Instruments or Infernal Devices. My understanding is that Mortal Instruments was written first, but Infernal Devices takes place first. Advice? Thanks!

LW (magicalmoodreader) | 62 comments Infernal Devices is sort of a prequel series. It's set in...Victorian(?) times where as Mortal Instruments is more present day.

Racheal (otherworldlyreader) | 143 comments I've read the Mortal Instruments Series (up until the 3rd book where she originally stopped), but haven't read the Infernal Devices Series. I think Infernal Devices is Victorian (possibly steampunk-ish?) Era and is a prequel to the Mortal Instruments Series, like Kori said. So maybe start there? I've heard a lot of people say that the ID series is better than the MI series.

Rummanah (Books in the Spotlight) (rummanahbooksinthespotlight) | 22 comments It really doesn't matter which series you read first. They both stand on their own. IMO the Infernal Devices is much stronger in writing, character development, etc.

Linda (lindajoy8) | 72 comments Agree with Rummanah. It really doesn't matter which you read first, but the order of release was :
City of Bones(MI)
City of Ashes(MI)
City of Glass(MI)
Clockwork Angel(ID)
City of Fallen Angels (MI)
Clockwork Prince (ID)
City of Lost Souls (MI)
Clockwork Princess (ID)
City of Heavenly Fire (MI)

I will say that if you do read them in this order, you will recognize names, etc as they are introduced in the ID series. But it would be just as enjoyable to read one and then the other.

I will also say that, like Kori, I enjoyed the ID series more.
Hope this helps :)

Paige Leighton (creative_attempt_at_username) | 1 comments I really think you should read infernal devices before COHF because there are a lot of mentions of TID characters in COHF but other than that it doesn't matter. Personally I finished reading COLS and well waiting for COHF (it was a long wait!) I read TID. On a different not I agree with everyone saying TID is better that TMI

Really enjoyed the film.

Linda (lindajoy8) | 72 comments David, hope you get to these sometime. The books are waaaaay better than the movie- they actually changed or left out huge parts of the book! You'll enjoy them!
