I'm enjoying this book so much. I'm taking my time because there is so much happening. I love this series because there it's not just about a couple or about a family, but it encompasses a whole kingdom. Each chapter reveals another backstory to a character, and another piece to the puzzle (you know how I'm a sucker for something to solve). With so many lands and people, the author can introduce any number of people into the landscape and intertwine their stories. I'm totally captivated!!
I'm about to start Part III (Quintana).....

I have to agree with you! It's wonderful to get a real feel for the people and their belief systems. I'm not sure I've completely understood all the people and their backstories. I tried to understand them, but I was usually reading right before bed, which is not the best time for my brain to work.
And if I'm honest, I don't know that I actually have liked Froi during this whole book. I don't really like most of the characters in this book, and yet I think the story is amazingly good. Well, I think I started liking Froi about an hour ago when he finally did something that I wanted him to do.

So true Kat! As much as I've loved unraveling all the different backstories, they can be confusing. I like the writing, but she makes me reread stuff a lot - because I feel like I catch up late or something...lol! There's a LOT going on and you really have to have ALL the lights on in your brain - ha!
And Froi has been frustrating at times, but overall I've liked this new Froi (as opposed to the one in the last book). Sometimes he surprises me and turns out looking somewhat honorable.
I just love how there is always something big to reveal all through the book - you don't have to wait for the end to finally get answers.

Hope and I were discussing things in our notes and then I realized I could just post them here since you've alreaady finished, LJ, and no one else seems to be here posting. So here goes:
Kat: It was so sad and shocking about Aria's death and all of theirs, really. I'm finding this book to be sooooo Adult Fiction-ish, in terms of the violence! She has reaally painted an ugly picture of the Charynites. If I were living at that time, I would NEVER want to live there. On the other hand, don't you feel a sadness for the common people?
Hope: I completely agree! It is horribly sickening and makes me so sad! :( Especially when you consider the amount of nice common people there are, but they are all considered evil because the leaders are insane and evil. It is so sad :( Especially Hamlyn and his wife's story :(
Also, I totally suspected that Froi was Lirah's son for most of the book, but I was completely surprised to find out that Gargarin's (or however his name is spelled/pronounced :P I always think of it as "gargling" :P) son!

I loved Hamlyn and his wife!! It almost has me wondering if their son, was his name John?, is going to be featured in the next book. I thought it stood out that they mentioned his name so randomly right before Froi left. I don't think they mentioned it when they were telling their son's story to Froi, just when he was leaving.
Me too!!! But yeah, Gargarin I didn't expect. LOL, the way you think of it! That hadn't occurred to me xD It's bugging me how much they are NOT loving Froi. It makes sense. They are all wounded souls, but it's soooo rubbing me the wrong way. Which, I suppose, is the sign of a good writer.

Oh - soooo glad you posted here!
I agree with kat about Hamlyn's son, John. It was too random to mention his name like that. I think we will hear about him again.
And, like both of you, I suspected Lirah, but Gargarin was a surprise.
How far are both of you??

I hope so! I think it would be so neat to learn more about him and have him come in and be an awesome character! :D
I totally agree with you about how they are acting toward poor Froi. Though it is almost funny.... :P But yeah, it's still horrible.
I'm at the part where Isaboe just came and visited Beatriss after Beatriss went and got all depressed.

I love that they are touching on Isaboe's insecurity as a mom. Everyone is giving her unsolicited advice and she's getting offended by it - which is EXACTLY what happens in our real world!! I love that she is both this fearless and strong leader of her people, and a totally-unsure- of-herself mom!

I FINALLY FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my GOSH!!!! I cannot believe the ending!!!!! I cried twice, even though I suspected I hadn't needed to, and then found out I was right.
1. Who do you think saved Froi?
2. What is Phaedra and her group up to?
3. Aren't you happy for Trevanian and Beatrice? :)

:D :D :D So did I! You should have seen Lydia when I gave her the book! :P
1. I don't know...good question. That part kind of confused me. Though I think it was meant to....still....
2. Another good question. I assumed that she wasn't dead (and of course that was revealed in the epilogue) but I don't quite know why it was done, at first I thought it was to keep them safe, but now it seems like it might be something else.
3. Duh! :D I was glad the book ended with that :)
4. I love Phaedra! She is my favorite character in the whole book!

Kat
Why? What was Lydia's response? Did she see you crying?
1. I'm thinking it might have been Olivier because he realized what an idiot he was, so he tried to make it up.
2. I thought it was to keep them safe at first too. But she said it was for the good of Charyn. What could that mean?
3. Duh yourself! That was very important to me, seeing as I'm old like them! :P And yes, thank goodness there was something happy at the end. My heart's breaking for Quintana.
4. I agree! She rocked!!!!!! Stupid, slow Lucien!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha! Noooooo! I got my act together first. Her response went a little like this.....
"Ahhhhh! :D HOPE! :D :D :D" Then she hugged the book. "It's so big! :D"
1. It crossed my mind, but it seemed kind of unlikely. I also kinda thought that maybe Grij had followed them and saw what happened and helped him, but it seemed unlikely too....
2. Silly Phaedra raising questions that will haunt us until we read the third book.
3. Oh yes, I loved all the old people jokes! xD! Ohhhhhh I know!!!! Poor Quintana! And Froi!!!! D: And yeah....like everyone else!
4. You mean Luci-en ;P

I kind of wanted him to die as well. Not because I wanted him to die, but you know....still I am glad he lived and at least he explained it. They weren't aiming to kill him and someone helped him survive. Plus there is magic so duh! And he has Arjuro now who can help heal him.
How do you pronounce Arjuro? Gargarin? Tippideaux? et al. :P

YAY!! You finished!!!!!!
The ending was heart-pounding!! This series is awesome!
1 - I think she's going to end up surprising me on this one. I've been trying to think who might of saved him -none of my scenarios end up making sense. There is some piece of the puzzle we are missing.... :(
2 - I knew by the way Rafuel was acting, that they were up to something. I'm glad she's not dead. I came to like her. Once again, I'm stumped as to what they are doing though. And although I'm glad that Lucian came around in the end, part of me just thinks it was a little too late - I don't really feel that bad for him since he was such a jerk!
3 - I'm SOOO happy for Trevanian and Beatrice!! I've wanted them back together from the beginning, but to be honest, it wouldn't have seemed as real given what they both went through. I loved the scene with them walking with Vestie and Trevanian tells her to call him "father" and then tells her to "shout it louder". They deserve to be happy!
There is SO much happening with so many different people that I almost feel like I need to re-read (at least the end) to fully let it all sink in.
I might even need to make some kind of flow-chart for myself so I won't be totally lost when the next book comes out.... lol!
I can't wait to see what happens next!

Good idea about the flow chart. I won't have my handy dandy sister to inform me of the plot....
Also, I liked Lucien, yeah he was a jerk but he had a lot resting on his shoulders and he was young and yeah....I feel bad for him. He is a good guy in the long run.

1. There was one guy who ruled the caves. Do you remember that? Maybe it was just the caves near the Citavita, I don't know. But he was very respectful of Quintana. That guy could have saved him. But it's just a guess.
2. I actually like Lucien, like Hope. He's so wounded from his dad's death. And he doesn't believe in himself. I'm really happy he ended up realizing he loved Phaedra. He's a complex character who makes mistakes.
3. I love that scene too!
I agree LJ, I feel like I need to re-read parts of it again. I especially want to re-read those words Froi spoke to Quintana right before they parted. It was such a beautiful speech and soooo overdue!
And hahaha...Gert and Bert :)

1. There was? I don't remember him at all! :P Why don't I remember him?
2. Agreed, I can't wait to see what happens with them in Quintana.
3. This has nothing to do with Kat's "3" But I think we should work together to create a flow chart so we can remind ourselves of what happened in Froi when Quintana finally comes out. I don't know just an idea. Lydia is reading through the book now and could help as well. Sort of the main points of each chapter or something like that.
I loved his little speech! It made their parting even worse! :(

1. Because it's a long book. REmember when Quintana went to the...oh what was she called....some kind of soothsayer that would drown her? And she escapes with Froi and they make it into the caves and there's this one grungy guy deep in the caves who knows Quintana and honors her?
2. If she's a good YA writer, she will have them end up together and in love. Which will make Kat happy :D
3. That's a great idea! Once we're done with it, we should save it somewhere, because this discussion will be deleted eventually. Then when book 3 comes out, we can start a new discussion and post our flow chart at the top :D
I know! I was thinking FINALLY you told her the truth!!!

1. OHHHH! Those caves! I thought you meant the caves where Gargarin lived.
2. Hahahahaha! Agreed! :P I'm sure that is what will happen. It makes so much sense anyway, why else have her "die" if not to make Lucien realize his utter stupidity find that she is alive and love her.
3. YAY! :D Good idea too, we don't want to risk losing all our hard work and be back where we started!!!

WOW - you 2 have been chatting while I've had my nose it Insurgent..lol!
1. when you mentioned the guy in the caves, it was driving me crazy to remember his name. I knew it started with a "P", but I finally found it. He is Perabo, the keeper of the caves, and he was in on the original plan of the lastborn lads to free Quintana.
2. I admit, though I didn't like Lucian being so cold, I can see this turning out like Kat mentioned and I'd be very happy with that - I'm sure their story will be one of the ones we get to follow in the next book.
3. I so agree about the timeline. It was hard for me to find the place in the book where "Perabo" was mentioned. This story is soooo dense! We must figure out the best way to highlight the main points and where they are in the book so they can be referred to easily.

Was thinking this morning about how much I love this series and these characters!! I'm truly going to grieve when the series ends. Like with Scorpio Races or The Shamer's Chronicles (by Kaaberbol) - I got so attached with both of those stories/characters that there was a real saddness when I closed the last page/book. I wanted to stay with them longer..... I'm just glad there is still more of THIS story to tell and I can't wait to read the next one!
Kat - back to what you mentioned somewhere above - you are so right about this being much more like an adult book. The subject matter alone puts it in a class with adult books, but the writing (like with Scorpio Races) puts it in a different class as well.

Do you know how many are in this series? Shamer's Chronicles, huh? I'll have to look that up. If you loved it that much, I'll no doubt love it too.
It really is such an adult book! To me there's nothing in here that makes it YA. Except, maybe, that the main characters are usually young.

While I was flipping back through the book this morning, I came across a couple of scenes that I love:
I love it when Froi is teaching her to defend herself. I love how he is never afraid or intimidated by her - ever - and it throws her off! In the scene, he give her pointers and leaves... then comes back a while later.
pg. 127 - This time when he tiptoed into the room, he felt an arm come around him instantly, the tip of a blade under his chin.
"See, now you're irritating me," he snapped, pushing her away. "Wrong place for the blade!"....
I also love Arjuro's quick witted comments throughout! This one made me laugh when I read it, it's when Quintana is explaining how she could be pregnant:
pg 414 "I thought you said he pleaded illness and lack of interest each time"...... "Well, he did," Quintana said indignantly. "But on the final night, he was up for swiving.......
"We don't use that word, Princess," Gargarin said politely.
"I use it all the time, " Arjuro said. "One of my favorite words, actually."

Ok.......pulling this back to the front so we can brainstorm. We should definitely do the names to know thing. I think that won't be too hard for us to do a bit of research, using the book and shelfari (though shelfari is notoriously bad at having the character list complete/correct) and such. And definitely do the 'where they are at the end of...' Cause everyone is all over the place :P
So the question is, do we want to do mini, chapter by chapter synopsis for the rest of the book. Probably just a couple sentences for the chapters of significant events. Also, if we didn't want to do it by chapter we could do a longer explanation by part. Or we could even combine two or three chapters into an explanation.

OK - I'm back home from my quick Chicago trip! Was fabulous, but I'm tired from the whirlwind trip. Sorry I've been out of the loop..... :)
Hope - I'm pretty sure I will have some time to work on this at work in the next few weeks. If you want, you can take the character list, and I can start on the chapter synopsis. Once I get going, I can see what will work best. I'm sure we will both end up doing chapters since there are so many and might take some time. Just let me know if you would rather do one thing or the other - I really don't mind either one.
Kat - No worries - if you get time, you can jump in. :)
