This book might be a Stephen king or Michael crichton or along those lines type of novel. The hero is the bad guy's attorney falling for the illegitimate daughter of the victim (who he meets on a plane). This bad guy was the victim's nephew and when he finds out about he attorney's attraction to the girl he murders the hero's dog- cuts off the head. The bad guy is really inspired by movies and carries out these gruesome scenes and tries to run the show like its his movie. I believe the heroine's name was Julie.

Its a 1980s to before 2010 book i think. i just came across it in the college library.
