I have a lot of emotions and thoughts about this week's chapters:
First off, I forgot how important lembas is to the Elves, which makes me even more impressed by Galadriel's gift in The Fellowship.
Secondly, I am astounded by the love Túrin inspires in nearly everyone he meets (and everyone he meets seems to feel strongly about him in some way). It makes me wonder; I know that part of it is his Elvish bearing, but even in Doriath, prior to his training he is loved. Beleg loves him with a passion (queer reading anyone), Mîm loves him despite the havoc Túrin and his band of outlaws caused. Naturally it was misguided and wrong of Mîm to betray them, but he tried bargaining for Túrin. Findulias loves him, Gwindor too, despite everything. And Túrin seems perfectly oblivious to it all? The most emotion we see him feel is at Beleg's death, but other than that he seems pretty distant and removed from everything (perhaps his mother shining through?).
I also think it's interesting how much emphasis is put on Túrin NOT being Beren. That the narrative of the Man who learns from the Elves is not interchangeable, that the man in question has to also be *worthy* of an Elvish maiden.

Lilly | 3 comments I only managed to catch up to week 2 now, because I actually managed to lose the book -_-

I had exactly the same reaction to the lembas - I remembered Galadriel's gift. Lembas and three strands of her hair.

I loved the chapter with Mîm. Of course it is tragic, but it adds so much to the history of the dwarves. It was so sad to think that Mîm had to live in halls that were made to house a great number of dwarves, a constant reminder of how far they had sunk. Of course the betrayal was wrong, but I think we can see why his character turned out like this.

I think this is partly why I find Turin such a frustrating character (one I want to shake and hug at the same time) - I mean, Melkor is gunning for him, so it's not like everything is his fault, but if he realised that people liked him and were on his side I think things could have ended up so different for him.
