Danielle (lone_firefly) | 3 comments I read this book a few years ago, so I probably am wrong about a few things. I remember the book followed two kids, I think they were around 10-13. A girl and a boy. They were on summer break, camping or something like that with a relative (grandpa, uncle or aunt maybe). I can't remember if they were brother and sister or friends, I feel like they were friends and both their families were camping. They started to get powers and I believe there were magical creatures. They also meet a gypsy boy and his people who guard a portal or something. I think the two kids decide to go with the gypsy boy at the end of the book. Sorry I can't remember more and thanks to all who try to help.

Jess | 125 comments Probably a long shot, but City of the Beasts by Isabel Allende? It's about two kids who go camping with the boy's grandmother. There was some sort of magical element to it, but I read it a while ago so I don't remember specifics.

No, I don't believe that's it. But I might try it out and thanks. ☺

Bonnie | 291 comments This one sounds right in some respects. I don't remember any camping in it, though. The girl and boy do have powers and they meet a gypsy boy with powers. There are magical animals the father makes out of clock parts. I believe there were portals involved in at least one book of this series.
