The Giver
question
I´m a little confused.

I´m a little confused by how the ending turned out. Did Jonas make it? What even happens? I read the second book. It doesn`t make any sense. nothing to do with Jonas. Please help clear this up. I really dont know how Jonas has anything to do with it.
If you read all four it makes more sense. But yes, they made it to a town outside and live there.
The ending to The Giver was meant to be ambiguous. I don't really know why she kept going. But yeah, keep reading the series to learn more. Or don't. It goes downhill with Messenger. Son is okay, from what I've heard.
Wait, there's four books!!!! Why did I not know this earlier!!!!

Yeah, there are four in total: The Giver, The Messenger, The Son, and Gathering Blue! (They are probably out of order)

Clearly a good point for a cliffhanger, I am disappointed in the book, as well as disappointed in the trend towards releasing book sets that could easily be a single book.

In this press conference Lois Lowry speaks about the ending of The Giver, she says she has always meant it to be a positive ending.

A little too spacey for me. I think I'm a little more down to earth.

In the second book she kept the one character vague so if you want it to be Jonas he can be Jonas. I don't know why she did that way though.

The only bad thing about this series is that the first time you read it, things seem odd because the second book doesn't include any of the original characters, and is set in a new community, so that generally takes people's opinion of it down a notch. However, I really enjoy it, and it is continued in the third book, and we meet our old characters again in the fourth and final book, Son. Just be aware that if you want to really get a good view of the books, reading them more than once is always good.
Also, we have little Socratic Seminars during school, and our first reading was Lois Lowry's "How Everything Turns Away" speech; that entire class has read the series, and none of us disliked it. I liked Messenger and Gathering Blue the most, because they were the most sentimental and had more depth and the Giver, though Son really touched me. If you want to discover more than the Giver, you should really read the whole series.
