Welcome to the group, Rick. Actually, I don't think I have wondered what goes on in the grocery store at night but many years ago I worked in a restaurant that was open all night and we sure did get some characters, especially after the bar closed.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Actually it wasn't that one but one similar a british girl.
I think she was a journo who took the job as a kind of undercover reporting.
Kind of like 'down and out in paris and london' by George Orwell which today has been superseded by Anthony Bourdains Kitchen Confidential.

Also the Babylon series does report on what goes on in various industries that nobody is allowed to talk about so its all anonymous.

Rick are you still a cashier or did publishing that memoir lose your job? I mean there was a movie made that became quite popular called 'Slackers' and it was about these young intelligent but gormless gen xers working at a grocery store. They basically goofed off because the job was so boring and played hockey on the roof.

message 106: by Rick (new)

Rick Bylina | 2 comments Actually, I know of her book. In fact, in one of my daily entries, I wrote about other "cashier" books. I'd forgotten about "Slackers". The British girl and the French gook that was made into a movie struck me as a bit mean toward those around her. Mine is a bit more upbeat with the funny, sad, odd, and uplifting stories that happened while I worked there. My perspective as an older person seems to be different from most o the other materials in the genre. My book (or FB entries) didn't get me fired. I left to help out with a family member. In fact, I just gave a copy of the book to some of my previous managers. The book was dedicated to Mr. Mike, who gave me my first job, which was in a grocery store and Mr. John, who gave me my last "corporate" job. During final edits, I realized that I started both jobs on July 9th, but 43 years apart. :-)

At least I got three good blog entries out of this election. (One on the fish blog and two on the chaos blog.) I have a feeling I'm going to be pretty busy with the chaos blog for the next four years...

I know. I'm in mourning. Maybe it will be ok. He has a republican congress so we will see if he continues to butt heads with some of them.

Just wondering what some of the members here that are not in the United States have heard about our new president and what they think of him.

I heard on another site that there have been attacks on gays and minorities since the election. Guess they feel they have a free reign now that he has been elected.
Also worried if my eldest might lose her job because she works for a company that provides services for Doctor's offices and hospitals dealing with the Affordable Care Act. I guess throwing people out of their jobs is part of the Republican plan.

I wish the people that are protesting in the streets would stop. They are not going to accomplish anything and it gives the Republicans ammunition. A friend said that if Trump had lost his supporters would not be out rioting in the streets. I wonder what planet she lives on.

Fishface | 2015 comments As I should have expected, people voted in the most fun-seeming candidate. It was probably the dead weasel on his head that got him so many votes; I mean he doesn't even really have a platform.

Julie (julielill) | 1676 comments Where is all this hate coming from. Jesus preaches love and acceptance and if you can't accept that then how can you call yourself a Christian.

By the way, Native Americans are the only true citizens of the US, all the rest of us have ancestors that were immigrants to the US at one time. Maybe the people who want immigrants to leave should re-think their opinion on that subject.

Trump is our President now and we can't change that but can we try to work together. Violence is never the answer.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments My cousin from america is coming over this christmas I will ask him about it all.

To me americans are kinda crazy and it would not surprise me if Mickey Mouse ran for president and won. If Mickey Mouse won I suppose those that voted for Goofy would be sorely disappointed too.

Selina, you are right. Americans are crazy. And getting crazier all the time. My brother-in-law is an election judge and he said in our small town there WAS one vote for Mickey Mouse and several write in votes for people that weren't running. It happens every year and I don't know why people think they are making a statement.

Write-in voting is not just a futile gesture. Strom Thurmond was voted in to Congress with write-in votes, winning by 63% against the "real" candidate listed on the ballot, and he remained there through the next two Ice Ages. Rumor has it he was still active in govt three years after his death.

Interesting. I wonder how many people have been elected by write-in votes. I mean when someone else is running and people just don't like that person. Obviously, many people have won when no one is running and people have to write in someone.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Well it happens in NZ too.
Which is why some elections, I don't vote. I didn't vote in the last local body. I'm not voting just for the sake of voting someone I don't even know just cos I heard of their name and not the others...

Just cos I'm enrolled doesn't mean I HAVE to vote. I have a choice too.
