Fatal Jeopardy - Fatal #7, by Marie Force

Washington, D.C. Police Lieutenant Sam Holland and her husband, U.S. Senator Nick Cappuano, have been looking forward to a quiet Thanksgiving with their son. But any thoughts of a restful holiday are dashed when Sam and Nick return home to a gruesome scene: Sam's seventeen-year-old niece Brooke, barely conscious and covered in blood on their front stoop.

With lines between personal and professional blurring in this emotionally charged, deeply personal case, Sam is relying on Nick more than ever for support. But when suspicious images from the night in question appear on social media, Sam begins to wonder if her niece is telling her everything she knows about what really happened. And when Nick questions her tactics—and her ethics—as she races against the clock, Sam will need to decide how far she's willing to go to prove Brooke is a victim, not a murderer.

Lara | 2335 comments Oooh, I knew the niece was headed for something bad, but this sounds really unpleasant. I'll be traveling that day, so maybe I'll be able to read it in one day. These book are pretty easy reads that way.

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments Yes they are fast reads.

Silvia In!

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments I'm starting now. This one seems to be shorter than usual. It's only 15 chapters.

Lara | 2335 comments Ooh good! I'm traveling tomorrow, so it should be a good way to pass the time.

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments I just want to read a murder mystery without anything sexual in it! Is it too much to ask?!

message 10: by Lara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lara | 2335 comments I've started it and this one is pretty bad that way. And I mean bad. It's awful so far, and I don't even know what really happened yet.

And I'm right there with you ShoSho. I'm tired of all of the sexual violence and abuse themes in so many books today.

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments I just read the part about Facebook posts. Does Facebook let you use simple and all letter passwords?I know a lot of sites don't let you do that anymore.

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments Prediction : Alex's mother will try to kidnap him and somehow gets killed!

Probably. Though I agree that many site are being more stringent. It was a very immature thing for her to do, and something I would have expected of a younger girl.

I really hope we don't have crazy drama with her in a future book. I'm not sure why the relationship has to be so hostile. After all, she asked for help, and just going through rehab doesn't mean you're suddenly cured. I think it's sad that we can't see her actually improve her life and work on a positive family relationship.

Have you read the court part? (view spoiler)

message 16: by ShoSho , Moderator (new) - rated it 3 stars

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments BTW I have no idea who might have done this and their motives and why they dumped Brook at Sam's house instead of killing her.
Do you?

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments I'm on chapter 9.

Lara | 2335 comments ShoSho wrote: "Have you read the court part?"

Yep. I agree. While I was dreading a play-by-play, I also felt the judge made a decision too quickly and easily. He didn't recognize the value of both parents having the opportunity to develop strong and caring relationships with Alex.

Lara | 2335 comments I finished this evening. I had trouble with the ebook. For some reason it was huge. I'm not sure why. And it made my Kindle app freeze up. I had to delete it and re-download it 2-3 times.

You do learn how Brooke got to Sam's place. It was pretty believable, though not totally. You don't learn it until later. And the who done it happens at the same time. I'm not sure I buy that part, as it was such an incredible over reaction. However, it seems like that particular character had really lost touch with what was reasonable behavior.

I agree with what you said.
Plus I think it would have been more believable if we knew more about the killer.
It's one of these books weaknesses, we never get to know the killer from the start. The killer only shows up in the last few chapters.

message 21: by Lara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lara | 2335 comments I agree it's a weakness, but it's also more realistic from an investigation perspective. Though, there is something to be said for having the killer as one of the people being investigated and only slowly developing the evidence that shows it is that person.

Silvia I'm reading now and just started chapter 3. I sure love Scotty! What a dream child. He's so grateful for everything and is so wise for his years. I don't have an opinion yet on Brooke, who/why/how...just that it's so tragic.

Silvia So glad that the judge gave Gonzo full and permanent custody of Alex!! Yay!

I think it was too easy, there will be more in the future books about custody battles!

Silvia Finished! I loved this book! Cried over Gonzo in the beginning and the end!

The mystery might not be very good but the emotional part is great :)

I agree ShoSho! This book, to me, was all about the secondary characters. Gonzo, sniffle, and Scotty had me at hello! I love Freddie too, him and his donuts melt my heart. When he reprimands Sam for taking the Lord's name in vain, I have to chuckle. Sam and Nick are strong MCs but I love the way this author always has something brewing in the background with the minor characters. ; )

I agree ShoSho! T..."

In a lot of books when it gets to the secondary characters stories I want that part to be over so I can get to the main characters but not in these books. Secondary Characters are as good (even better) as the main characters.
