And I'm right there with you ShoSho. I'm tired of all of the sexual violence and abuse themes in so many books today.

Probably. Though I agree that many site are being more stringent. It was a very immature thing for her to do, and something I would have expected of a younger girl.

I really hope we don't have crazy drama with her in a future book. I'm not sure why the relationship has to be so hostile. After all, she asked for help, and just going through rehab doesn't mean you're suddenly cured. I think it's sad that we can't see her actually improve her life and work on a positive family relationship.

Have you read the court part? (view spoiler)

Do you?

Yep. I agree. While I was dreading a play-by-play, I also felt the judge made a decision too quickly and easily. He didn't recognize the value of both parents having the opportunity to develop strong and caring relationships with Alex.

You do learn how Brooke got to Sam's place. It was pretty believable, though not totally. You don't learn it until later. And the who done it happens at the same time. I'm not sure I buy that part, as it was such an incredible over reaction. However, it seems like that particular character had really lost touch with what was reasonable behavior.

I agree with what you said.
Plus I think it would have been more believable if we knew more about the killer.
It's one of these books weaknesses, we never get to know the killer from the start. The killer only shows up in the last few chapters.

I think it was too easy, there will be more in the future books about custody battles!

The mystery might not be very good but the emotional part is great :)

I agree ShoSho! This book, to me, was all about the secondary characters. Gonzo, sniffle, and Scotty had me at hello! I love Freddie too, him and his donuts melt my heart. When he reprimands Sam for taking the Lord's name in vain, I have to chuckle. Sam and Nick are strong MCs but I love the way this author always has something brewing in the background with the minor characters. ; )

In a lot of books when it gets to the secondary characters stories I want that part to be over so I can get to the main characters but not in these books. Secondary Characters are as good (even better) as the main characters.
Washington, D.C. Police Lieutenant Sam Holland and her husband, U.S. Senator Nick Cappuano, have been looking forward to a quiet Thanksgiving with their son. But any thoughts of a restful holiday are dashed when Sam and Nick return home to a gruesome scene: Sam's seventeen-year-old niece Brooke, barely conscious and covered in blood on their front stoop.
With lines between personal and professional blurring in this emotionally charged, deeply personal case, Sam is relying on Nick more than ever for support. But when suspicious images from the night in question appear on social media, Sam begins to wonder if her niece is telling her everything she knows about what really happened. And when Nick questions her tactics—and her ethics—as she races against the clock, Sam will need to decide how far she's willing to go to prove Brooke is a victim, not a murderer.
