message 1: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lillylisaa) | 1 comments I often take books with me for bus and train journeys which means that the book I'm reading is usually left in my bag. This means that I don't really read when I'm in bed that much due to either not being able to find the book or not wanting to go and get it.
So, as I've just organised my bookshelf and I can see that I actually have quite a lot of books I was thinking of starting to have 'bed books' which would mean I would be reading a different story before bed than what I am reading in the day. They will possibly swap places and come with me at times but I think the general idea will get me reading more before bed :D

message 2: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Stringer | 344 comments I know a lot of people who do that, and I myself have read a few books at once before. I usually prefer not to if I don't have to, but there's no reason why you can't try it and see how it goes.

message 3: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea Chiosa I haven't done it. I have a fear that if I start one while reading another I won't ever go back to finish the first.

message 4: by Booked (new)

Booked | 17 comments I don't find it confusing at all! I'm often reading three books at one time. A serious one, a lighter one, and a read-while-eating one (somehow, certain books are better for reading while eating than others). :)

message 5: by Trinity (new)

Trinity Casey | 28 comments I mean it's not confusing but it does stress me out (I get stressed easily) so I tend not to do it. I do read a school book at the same time as a personal book a lot so that's not a big deal.

message 6: by BethLee (new)

BethLee (bethmusic) I do that a lot. I have a set bedtime book (usually an ebook) as well as one or 2 other books that I am reading at a time. If they are different genres, it is hard to confuse them. For example, I usually read a realistic fiction (my favorite genre) at night, and fantasy, sci,-fi, and other stuff during the day. It is rare for me to only be reading one book.

message 7: by Kristina (new)

Kristina Prior to reading multiple books, I always thought I would get them mixed up. It may help that I listen to audio books at the same time, but any given week, I am ready / listening to 3 books.

reading a physical book at home
listening to a book at work
listening to a book in my car

I think if you try it you will get used to it.

message 8: by L.S. (new)

L.S. May | 19 comments I don't do it a lot, but I've never gotten them confused. I mean, do you get mixed up watching an episode of one TV show, then an episode of another?
That being said, if they were really similar, or you were waiting a long time between them, it could happen.

message 9: by Sara (new)

Sara (speezy) Absolutely!! What happens when I have more that one book on the go is that I get too consumed by one book then neglect the other. When I finally resume reading the book I've neglected, I am too removed from the story to really enjoy it.

message 10: by Jill (new)

Jill | 1 comments I'm usually reading 3-4 books at a time, but I try to make sure they're all very different. And I usually include at least 1 nonfiction title. That way I don't get the content of each all jumbled in my brain :D

message 11: by Ayesha (new)

Ayesha | 16 comments We are all literary polygamists!

message 12: by Hanna (new)

Hanna (hannasw) | 78 comments I'm usually reading 2 books at the same time. One is ebook and one is real book. Ebook is the one I'm reading in bed before sleeping because I don't have night light and my youngest kid still sleeps at the same room. So it's easier to read hardcovers at daytime.

message 13: by Nicole (new)

Nicole N. (A Myriad of Books) (amyriadofbooks) I used to read a few at a time but then I felt I just read slower because I was keeping up with so many. Now I read only one (rarely two) at a time because then I can read it within a few days and focus only on that one.

The Life Of A Firefly (thelifeofafirefly) | 171 comments I am usually reading a couple of books at a time, though i try and stick with one, but it disen't seem possible for me. I will catch up and be reading one, and then another one and eventually i will be reading around 5 at a time. Its not so confusing to remember each one, but normally, they are a mixture of different genres and writing styles.

message 15: by Skydreamer (new)

Skydreamer Lee | 61 comments I can read multiple book at a time, but that makes my reading slow and disoriented so I don't usually do that

message 16: by Sushi (new)

Sushi ♥ (sushixreads) | 18 comments I'm usually reading 2 books at a time, one for school and one for me. It doesn't really get confusing but it does get hard to pick which one to read in the moment.

message 17: by Cookie (new)

Cookie O'Gorman (cookieogorman) | 8 comments I wish I could read more than one book at a time. Tried it a few times, but most times I feel like I'm not giving either book my complete attention. If the books are completely different genres, it's easier. But again, I WISH I could read like three books at a time because there are so many great reads in my TBR :).

message 18: by Kat (last edited Feb 20, 2016 12:56AM) (new)

Kat | 334 comments I usually have more than one book going at a time, even 5 or 6 simultaneously. If I do that too much, on occasion, I might mix up one or two things but it's no big deal. I get bored very easily/have different reading moods so that's why I like to switch up between books and then go back to the one I wasn't interested in/feeling like reading and try and continue it again the next day. I have a physical book I read in my room at bedtime, and an ebook each that I'm reading on my two different laptops, whenever I'm on one of them. I'm just starting to see if I like audiobooks too. :)
I actually try not to start too many, keep it a minimum to 3 or 4 most of the time. And it's only if the books have similar things happening/situations that I might mix them up a little, but nowadays it doesn't happen very much.

message 19: by Amber (new)

Amber (bookvampirewub) | 9 comments If I can't get into a book I move on, and then come back to that one, it isn't too confusing. If I still can't get into that book that I came back to by page 60 than there is a problem. I review and politely say that the book wasn't for me, and make sure I state the reason. I have a harder time getting into anything that isn't paranormal or urban fantasy.

message 20: by Mochaspresso (new)

Mochaspresso | 5 comments I don't find it to be confusing. For me, the main downside has been that I read slower and it takes me longer to finish a book. I also find that occasionally certain books fall to the wayside and stay unfinished. I have good intentions of finishing them all, but the reality is that sometimes I come back to them and sometimes I do not.

message 21: by Martin (new)

Martin Pibbs (pibbs) | 2 comments If I read more than one book at once, it's usually because I'm not enjoying one.

message 22: by Palash (new)

Palash (naikon) | 4 comments Martin wrote: "If I read more than one book at once, it's usually because I'm not enjoying one."

Same here.

message 23: by Megan Y (new)

Megan Y (meganxyang) This has always been me, though I don't really like it. The main reason that I have about 10 books in my currently reading shelf is that I never have time to read "free" books (i.e. books unrelated to schoolwork/English class). I've decided to change that, so you'll see me be more consistent (maybe 2-3 books at once) as time goes on.

It isn't hard, but sometimes I have to go back and review plot lines to understand what's going on.

message 24: by Jillybean (new)

Jillybean (jillybean25) Max 2 books at a time for me. And they need to be of different genre to make it not confusing. otherwise, same as others, would only be reading more than my 2 limit because I'm not enjoying / struggling to finish atleast one of them.

message 25: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Whittemore No. It's like YouTube. Binge reading. Read one story then go to the next. I read different genres all at once though. Like philosophy and then history. Not different sets of fiction. That would be more of a struggle.

message 26: by Gloria (new)

Gloria (glory_93) I only have try with two books at the same time if one of them is for school/university. It's something that I don't like because finally I always finish one and then continue with the other. It's not for me reed more than one book at the same time. It only works if only one of them is fiction.

message 27: by D.B. (last edited May 06, 2016 07:48AM) (new)

D.B. Woodling | 21 comments If I'm reading another book before finishing the first, chances are the first isn't going to get a 5-star rating.

message 28: by Nellie ☾ (new)

Nellie ☾ (derpnerys) | 185 comments I suppose it's alright if you would remember where you left off. I rarely do it. If I'm immersed in a novel, I'd read only that. Right now I'm reading three--one that I don't really like to finish now, one that I like, and one nonfic. But yep, when I do it's either fiction + nonfiction, or a full novel and a novella or anything shorter.

message 29: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Kelly (herfictionalfelicities) Not so much confusing, rather it can be distracting. I don't always feel I can truly appreciate a book when I am reading several others simultaneously. For this reason I try to not read more than one, particular if it's a special book I've been anticipating.

message 30: by Lala (new)

Lala Land (lamega) | 47 comments You don't really get to enjoy the book to the fullest because you have other books that are lingering in your head.

message 31: by Dana (new)

Dana Wallace - Not Enough Books, Not Enough Time (danaaa_99) | 5 comments See I don't have a problem with reading multiple books at once unless they are similar in writing. Like if I'm reading two dystopic novels at once, then sometimes the lines blur when I think about the book but then once I start reading, I'm not confused anymore

message 32: by Erin (new)

Erin | 1 comments I wondered about this myself a few months ago but the way I think about it is if I can watch many different shows at the same time why couldn't I keep sorry lines in books straight? I have at least 3 I'm reading at all times.

message 33: by Jacky (new)

Jacky (spotonculture) | 8 comments I think it depends on how much I like the book until then and if I can put it down or not. At the moment, I'm reading 12 books at once. Some are for university, but most of them private fun. And some of them are so damn good that I rush through it in 2-3 days, and others are quite tedious, so I started them months ago and just read a few pages from time to time. But I think it depends on the story. What you shouldn't do is to pause a very complicated book to read another - something like Game of Thrones for example. Pausing a light and easy romance is okay, I never had problems to get back into the story after reading in another book.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Right now I'm about to read three books. It isn't confusing. It's just a little annoying because you want to finish one, but you're more interested in the other. Right now I'm reading Alice in Zombieland, and I started that months ago. Two nights ago, I started Stitching Snow but ended up talking to someone over the phone for hours and then fell asleep. Now, Cress came into the mail and I already jumped right into the book since it's one of my favorite series. I don't think I can read so many books at one time though. I'm a slow reader, and I'm always getting distracted by someone or something else. Honestly, I've been spacing out a lot when I read Alice in Zombieland. I just want to finish it honestly lol.

message 35: by lexi (new)

lexi Not really

message 36: by Tristen (new)

Tristen (bo0kenthusiast) Nah

message 37: by Katrina♡•• (new)

Katrina♡•• | 228 comments Its not confusing for me. When you are reading one book just keep your mind on that and not the others.

message 38: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nics2) | 44 comments I tend to read a lot of books at once, but basically there is this main one that I read most of the time and some others that I read between finishinh reading and buying a new book or when I get bored of the one that I am currently reading

message 39: by Bell (new)

Bell It confuses me so much!!!

message 40: by Ayan (new)

Ayan | 76 comments I can only read one book at a time. It's simpler and helps me finish books even if I don't seem to care for it.

message 41: by mollusskka (new)

mollusskka I usually read only one book at a time but now I'm trying to read more than one so it's still a bit confusing. Sometimes I have to get back to the previous pages to check where I stopped.

message 42: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 2 comments It doesn't confuse me. The stories are different so it doesn't confuse me. I follow several tv show, movies, video game, comic book, manga as well as books story lines all at the same time usually. I'm currently reading two books at the same time. Sometimes I just feel like switching it up, I don't do this all the time tho. I might have to refresh my memory maybe, if it's been like a year since I read a book or if I get a new book in a series I read awhile ago.

message 43: by Lindy (new)

Lindy | 11 comments I think that it depends on the books. If the stories are relatively similar it may get confusing but if they are different... I don't find it too hard. Now it is definitely more efficient to read one at a time, but let's be honest; where's the fun in that?

message 44: by Alison (Marie) (new)

Alison (Marie) (adecks97) | 8 comments I can be reading a book, pause it, start another, finish that one, and though go back to the first one just fine. But I couldn't alternate back and forth. That would get way too confusing.

message 45: by mollusskka (new)

mollusskka Alison wrote: "I can be reading a book, pause it, start another, finish that one, and though go back to the first one just fine. But I couldn't alternate back and forth. That would get way too confusing."

Actually, that's what I'm doing with my 11 currently reading books LOL.

message 46: by Kate (new)

Kate (midnightbooklistener) | 2 comments The only time I have confusion is if I'm reading two books with similar plots. Usually I try to read different genres.

But I also read 3 to 4 books at a time. One on audio, one on my rereader, and one or two in print. Right now I'm only reading 2, because I'm trying to focus on an eArc for an upcoming book signing, but it's YA and my audiobook is Adult and the two are very different in tone and style.

message 47: by Grace (new)

Grace Crandall (gracecrandall) | 31 comments Not so much confusing as confining... Getting up in the morning is hard when there's a wall of unfinished novels next to the bed :)

message 48: by Farren (new)

Farren (mmmcookies) | 302 comments I'm always reading at least 2 books at at time, if not 3 or 4. I listen to one audiobook and read one ebook minimum. Sometimes I go back and forth with different books, and if I like one better then sure, I'll finish that one first, but I don't ever get them confused. And I have a terrible memory! If you watch multiple tv shows you don't get those mixed up right??? I would hope not. Although if I'm watching a tv show based on a book series sometimes they get a bit blurred, but that's probably a whole other topic there =)

message 49: by G.G. (new)

G.G. Marshall (ggmarshall) | 1 comments I do that a lot, too. The only issue is sometimes if a book is somewhat boring I tend to forget about it. I also know a book is really good if I put all the others aside to speed through that one. I do also sometimes read one at a time. I think it's a personal preference thing.

message 50: by Ericka Rheanne (new)

Ericka Rheanne (erickarheanne) | 2 comments I usually have the worst memory ever, but I have no problem reading multiple books at a time. I'm reading seven or so right now and I haven't had any confusion! But it helps sometimes if each book is of a different genre. I read several at once because what I read depends on my mood at the moment and my mood changes frequently.
