Lynda Engler (lyndaengler) | 3 comments It's been a while since I read any of Jack's books, mostly because I've just been too busy to read, but I decided to do some catch up with "Coming Home" and "Thunderbird." Coming Home is the latest in the Alex Benedict series, narrated by his pilot Chase Kolpath. I always thought the books were really about her, not her boss, but it makes an interesting POV to narrate this way. Coming Home finishes off the mystery of the lost ships (fell into time warp/space), which has been nagging at me for w while, so I was happy to finally get closure on that issue (First World Reader problem, lol.)

Coming Home also brings our characters back to Earth, a place they don't often visit. 9,000 years into our future, McDevitt's view is that we've overcome war, societal and racial prejudices, and greed, but we are still very much human, don't live forever (and still have some medical problems), have a need to advance and succeed (although our very lives no longer depend on it), and most importantly: CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES AND SPAGHETTI STILL EXIST.

I'm not into giving away spoilers so you'll just have to jump into Coming Home to find out more. It's worth the trip!

Scott I thought this was the best one since the first couple. The novels in between did start to get a little formulaic though I still enjoyed them.

Laz the Sailor (laz7) I prefer the Academy series. I really like Hutch, and each new world is fascinating.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I love the Academy series too. My dad got me hooked on it. He really liked McDevitt and was always looking for authors similar to them. A friend of my brother got him some Alistair Reynolds, but he didn't think they were as good.

I think that he liked them because they sort of reminded him of the serials of his youth.
