I did not say you did. That was just my thought and comment about the worlds.

End of 9 of the subtle knife (view spoiler)

message 55: by [deleted user] (new)

Done with subtle knife - I think I enjoyed this one more than the first book. We get to see more into who Lyra is and now Will is in the picture. I love the way that Philip writes his books. Just pure magic.

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

Going to read the 3rd book starting Monday.

End of chapter 2 of the amber spyglass

I like Will, a lot and I love that this book brings the different worlds. Not just Lyras and his world. It's interesting to see what the other worlds are like.

Love the writing. It's easy to tell tha Philip jpg it better with each book.

** have you heard about how BBC is making a tv show based on the first book?? Don't know when it will air.

Pip (subtlesraf) | 53 comments I adore Balthamos & Baruch, Mary Malone and the mulefa especially in this book. and the choices and changes Lyra's parents make, particularly mrs coulter :)

hahahaha yep I found out about the BBC adaptation last year and immediately started badgering them about what progress was being made - they politely fobbed me off lol

Seeing some of the changes in Mrs. coulter surpised me and shocked me the first time I read it.

I hope I get the show in California.

Pip (subtlesraf) | 53 comments well it'll be a while before they Ben begin casting let alone filming so by then pull be able to afford some online membership to netflix or something :)

Mrs Coulter is honestly one of the most deeply complicated, cunning characters in all literature. She's done the most abhorrent things for power and yet does one of the most dangerous, selfless things she could think of.

The golden monkey is the most fascinating element to me — how he shows Mrs Coulter's inner nature and the sickening cruelty an heartlessness she has at we cor.

End of 8

One of my favorite parts is the sections after each chapter that are like conversations with Lyra and Roger. I love seeing and reading these small moments that are bundling one large conversation.

message 66: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip (subtlesraf) | 53 comments it's a conversation between Lyra and Roger

Pip (subtlesraf) | 53 comments no it's not ARGH

I have mentioned the mulefa already, but not Mary's relationship with them, particularly her close companion Atal, I think they grow very attached to each other and it's lovely :3 and I'm so proud of Mary for grasping their language so wonderfully and doing absolutely everything she can to help them and bring the sraf back down to the seed-pod trees. She is one of my absolute favourite characters.

I fucking give up

What's wrong?

For me this is one of those series where I don't really have a favorite favorite character because the characters are so complex and interesting and they have what I cal mini changes throughout the series that at time I'm liking the character and then I'm not. It shows how amazing the author is at writing characters in my opinion.

message 73: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip (subtlesraf) | 53 comments I agree with the mini changes, in every character, it shows how complex and varied they really are

(just that damn spoiler html stuff I can't do it and it's driving me insane so screw it I'm not bothering any more)

message 74: by [deleted user] (new)

Got it. It took me some time to learn it.

Done.

I think in the end that this was and will always be my favorite book. I love the first book because it introduces us to the characters and the worlds but this book ties it all together with so much happening.

Characters go through so much development that the author actually had me switching my opinions on a few characters as I was reading.

The settings!! My favorite part. The amazing settings that the author provides readers. It's always a delight to visualize them in my head.

I loved Lyra, Will, Roger, and Mary. All 3 are so different but at the same time they are the same. Traveling and trying to survive.

Overall Philip has created a masterpiece. And one I love to revisit when I can.

Once Upon a Time in the North

Most likely these will be in spoiler brackets. I will try not to put all of them in them.

Up to page 6 - Iorek Byrnison is one of the most fascinating characters. As an armored bear his journey and travel In the series is huge. And I love that with this we are getting the meeting of Iorek and Lee.

Up to page 40 (view spoiler)

Up to page 50 - I really like when authors throw in documents like the "bill of lading". It allows readers to see what the character are talking about or dealing with. A visual aspect to the story.

Done - a quick and easy to follow book added to a great series. I enjoy reading more about certain characters. And getting more of an insight into Lee was great.

And as a added I love the game at the end. "Peril of the Pole" is a fun aspect for readers.

I have to admit that it is my favourite of the three also it is so rich and saturated with brilliance, no other writer can keep my attention in such a way.
