This is one of Jeffrey Konvitz's books, either The Sentinel or The Guardian (aka The Apocalypse). It's a long time since I read them and they both take place in the same apartment building, so I don't remember which book the young couple are in.

This was a paperback I read in the mid 80s but I think the novel might have been written in the 70s.
All I can remember about the story is that it's a young couple with a baby who have moved to a new apartment. The protagonist realises that one of the people in the building is possessed by a demon. It turns out that his wife is the possessed. Also turns out that the wife is a man
I have vague recollections of a scary scene in a basement - sorry - but I was very young when I read this. It scared me but I don't remember much more
Any help would be much appreciated!
