message 51: by André (new)

André (alfarrabiste) | 1342 comments I am not a Goodread librarian but I have recently posted long list of corrections to be done on folders related to books in French. I think that an easy way to simplify the work of librarians is that the person who has asked for a correction delete his/her request message once he/she has checked that the correction was done.

If the correction has partly been done, the message should remain but edited to take account of what was already done.

Do you agree with such a practice ?

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments No. When someone deletes their post, the numbering of the thread is out & that causes a lot of confusion. In addition new librarians can't learn from experienced librarians when the thread no longer makes sense.

message 53: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 31381 comments It's a nightmare when someone deletes posts.

message 54: by Emily (new)

Emily | 17452 comments If you want to mark posts as done, you can edit the request to say DONE or COMPLETE or something like that at the top of each one.

message 55: by Emy (new)

Emy (emypt) | 5037 comments André, best practice here is to edit the original message OR post title either to say "Done" OR (in a post only) to use < s > around the text to score it through.

e.g.
Please edit Book 1
becomes:

Please edit Book 1 - Done
DONE - Please edit Book 1
Please edit Book 1

The longer the post the more important it is for us Librarians to be able to keep track using Post numbers.
In shorter posts, we use the text of the original request to keep track of policy changes and practices - e.g. new librarians seeing requests fulfilled or denied have a better idea on what is and isn't acceptable.

message 58: by Arenda (new)

Arenda | 26448 comments Time to bump this thread and please mark posts as done.

See this post for example: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
(There were several Librarians involved here)

I've checked all pages after my last post in that thread to see if anyone else had worked on this thread, and if so, where I should continue.
There is enough to be done already. Opening links and discovering the request is already done is very frustrating.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Arenda wrote: "Opening links and discovering the request is already done is very frustrating."

Sometimes things get done without the librarian knowing there has been a request.

message 60: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 31381 comments Yes, that's happened to me too.

Though mostly I agree that librarians get caught up in what they're doing and forget to come back and say done. Or the odd few who never come back and say done :(

There were a couple of times over the weekend, that I could not respond or edit anything at all in any group. So apologize for not getting back to some requests to say I was done.

That being said, particularly in the lengthy request threads like the combine, it is VERY discouraging to find multiple requests in a row that are not identified as being done.

Yes, thanks.

Been coming across a few again.
Think it's newly inaugurated librarians that are not aware of doing this

Off-topic post removed. For other policy & practice issues, start new threads.

message 65: by Beverly (new)

Beverly (bjbixlerhotmailcom) | 41 comments Message #55:
I have not figured out how to edit the actual request title itself, to add "Done" or whatever. I have simply typed "Done" in a separate post underneath the request.

Scott | 8536 comments Beverly wrote: "Message #55:

That's correct.

Only the original poster can edit the thread title.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments This is happening again with page counts. While (of course!) we are grateful if the requester marks the request as done either in the title or on a post, the librarian concerned should also mark the request as done, for the reasons given in the first post.

message 68: by Dobby (new)

Dobby (dobby0390) | 7857 comments Time again for a gentle reminder for librarians to please mark posts done as they are completed to help us see which requests are still open.

RoXXie | The Art of Reading (roxxiesixx) | 202 comments Just saw this here, but used "working on it" as soon as I was about to start to work on a request. No matter how long it takes.

But it definitely helps moving on to another request. ❤️

message 70: by Michele (new)

Michele | 6345 comments Could someone clarify this policy? I have been faithfully marking posts "done" but have been reprimanded twice now and told that I should not mark "old" posts done. I'm not sure what counts as "old" but perhaps this needs to be clarified as "Mark posts done, unless they are older than [6 months] [8 months] [whatever]" ? I want to do what's right, but am uncertain about the specifics on this one.

Many thanks :)

In one reply to an old post’s comments, the moderator stated “please only respond to threads that are less than a year old, and don't comment on those that have been addressed during that time.”

message 72: by Michele (new)

Michele | 6345 comments OK, that helps - thanks!

message 73: by Karin (new)

Karin | 3219 comments I want to mention an up-date with the new folder [Closed] Added Books/Editions.

You can ask to mark posts "DONE" but also to move the post to the new folder [Closed]

Jaclyn has an example to use:

This request is now complete. To help librarians, please move it to the Closed folder. This is only possible when on the desktop site:

1. Click the 'edit' button to the right of the discussion heading
2. Change the folder to '[Closed] Added Books/Editions'
3. Don't forget to Save!

It's from this thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Elizabeth (Alaska) I think this thread started because librarians weren't noting that they had completed the request. It has only been since the change in adding books that non-librarians have been asked to mark posts done.

Yes indeed, but a lot has changed since 2016. It's much easier for librarians that the title itself has been modified and especially if the requester moves it into the [Closed] folder. :-))) Thanks to you!

message 76: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Mar 15, 2023 02:14PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) It doesn't matter what has changed or what today's date is. This request is not just for the Adding Books folder and it is not directed to members who are not librarians.

Elizabeth (Alaska) And I'll just add the comment that all the OPEN or PENDING stuff is distracting. These members might as well have flashing lights on their posts. Just color me not interested.

Agreed.
Seems passive-aggressive to me.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments I find open useful. Pending confuses me.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ wrote: "I find open useful. Pending confuses me."

OK, but they mark Open on requests that are only a week old. It seems to me they should be ignored. (Not that I haven't responded to requests made within the hour. They were for titles I thought librarians would ignore forever.)

message 81: by L J (last edited Mar 15, 2023 05:18PM) (new)

L J | 625 comments Open is okay but OPEN is annoying even though I find DONE helpful.

Pending to me means someone is already working on it as that is what it meant everywhere I worked and yes, I know that's not the meaning here.

Back to the original purpose of this discussion. It does help if Librarian comments Done when task is completed. Librarian comment working on it can also be helpful.

Karin and Jaclyn, thank you so much -- that's super helpful, I'll start including that when I complete a post. ♥ ♥ ♥
