The MC was wishy washy and the ocean just accept all her sorries every time. Lame. The other sirens got on my nerves too much. And the "plot" was barelyyyyyyyyyyy there. And then she goes and stupidly opens her mouth when they're in his house, and at first I was confused, then I realised what happened. But I think it was so stupid that the Ocean let her save him. What good will it do? I think it's fair enough that the Ocean added on another 50 years. And all she does is mope around. She annoys me slightly. (hide spoiler)]

Review: I didn't like this book that much. I had such high hopes for it, what with it being written by Kiera Cass, but I thought it was slightly unbelievable. Kahlen annoyed me quite a lot, and the love was also unbelievable. The way she (view spoiler)[remembered everything about him, stuff she shouldn't even have been able to get to know in that short time, for they hardly even did anything together, was really far-fetched. (hide spoiler)] And the whole (view spoiler)[Ocean having a voice and being like a mother to them, (hide spoiler)] I kind of thought there was an ulterior motive, but there wasn't. And I feel like I barely got to know Akilni, who was the main guy in the book. Overall, this book was alright.

I am very curious about this book's mythology; chapter 1 was amazing! However, I'm not liking Kahleen very much. Or Akilni, he's too god.

Am I the only one who thinks Kahlen is very vain? Here's an example from chapter 6: (view spoiler)[the day before she was supposed to meet with Akilni, he sent her a picture and she wanted to reply with another picture and the first thing she thought about was sending one of her beautiful dresses so he would see them. Kahlen: (view spoiler)[Every time I like her less and less. I just don't get her. She doesn't have much of a relationship with her sisters; I understand their situation isn't ideal but if someone could understand her, it would be her sisters. Also, they do everything she says; it's good that they're loyal but Kahlen doesn't even think things through. And even though she is the oldest, there are some things that they all should discuss, like moving away.
I also don't understand why she starts doubting everything right now. How was she before meeting Akinli then?

I've just finished. Sorry if I didn't comment much, but there wasn't much to say.

Characters: (view spoiler)[I still feel the same way about them; I didn't like any of them particularly. I liked Aisling, but she left very early on, and I also liked Maika, but that's it.
And as I said, it's a shame we didn't get more of Padma's story or even got into the Ocean, that would have been interesting.
My least favourite characters were, of course, Kahlen and Elizabeth. I just didn't get Elizabeth's character. (hide spoiler)]

I think this book would have worked a lot better (for me, of course) if it were a spin-off or we already knew the characters and the mythology behind the book. (view spoiler)[We're not told much about it, as the romance is what's key here , and that was a real disappointment. However, I liked seeing little nods to different mermaid and siren interpretations and adaptations (the voices, other water spirits, the bird sirens, rusalkas...). (hide spoiler)]

Agreed. (view spoiler)[ The Ocean was always sparing her, and I couldn't understand why. I didn't like the Ocean at all; it would have been an interesting character if properly developed, but we didn't get much.
What you say about Kahlen and Akilni's relationship is so true! I tried to enjoy their encounters but it was so funny when I kept reading about Kahlen being sooooooooo in love and knowing so much about him when they just met! (hide spoiler)]

I have read the first Selection books and I actually enjoyed them a lot. But for a distopian series, (view spoiler)[ it has nothing distopian and I guess the same happened here. However, in my opinion, it doesn't work that well because in the Selection, we already know the main plot would involve love, and it's a series, so there is more room for other topics. I am into the book because I think Kiera just has that ability to suck you in. I wish you were enjoying it more. I do really love her writing, but I did not like the reasons for siren's doing what they do in this book.
