How can you not feel for a blind girl and an orphaned boy from two countries at war? Doerr draws the main characters beautifully. In fact, this is the best book I read in 2015, and I read a lot of literary prizewinners, My only gripe is the structure which goes back and forth between periods of time. However, this seems to be a popular device at the moment, though not one that makes it easy for the reader!
I love that it goes back and forth, although it's not for everyone. A bit difficult to read because of that. I adore the blind girl, the way he uses imagry with her is very descriptive and everything but sight. I cant wait to read more and find out what happened to the boy, he seems interesting.
If you like this you may also like Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky (also set in WW2) and The Moon Field by Judith Allnatt (set in WW1).
I really loved Marie Laure and Werner! They were so much fun to read about. I also loved the side characters like Frederick, Volkheimer, Uncle Etienne, and Madame Manec. You will love this book!
I adore WERNER and offcourse love Marie Laure, her uncle Etienne ,Volkheimer and Frau Elena all all of them
I love them and I love the feeling in the book of the two moving together. I can't praise this book highly enough for its utterly imaginative writing and character creation.
I agree, I loved the characters but I have given up on the book because of the structure it seems boring and drags on.
Robyn wrote: "Try and stick with it if you can, as the ending is remarkable."Hmm. I enjoyed the book, UNTIL the end. I would be very interested to know what you found remarkable?
