Shiloh (astorydream) | 1 comments How does everyone find their next book? Blogs, friends, online search, bookstore? HOW? I am always trying to find books that haven't been referred to me a million times already. I want something new and exciting!

Tell me how you find your books. Thanks!

Jessica (Goldenfurpro) (goldenfurproductions) | 1020 comments I find a lot of books thanks to blogs. I'm subscribed to many blogs and I'm always running into books that look interesting!

Other ways is from just prowling new releases or new cover reveals.

I also go to many used booksales, where I basically just pick up whatever looks like YA (since all the books are so cheap)

message 3: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments I follow my favorite authors. Sometimes they recommend books they have read, so I usually give those a go as well. I also love going through new releases here on Goodreads to find what might interest me.

message 4: by Marla (new)

Marla | 1348 comments I pick a book that fits what I need for a book challenge.

I also participate I Pick U Pick and Take 5 in other groups where people pick books for me from a list.

My tbr is more like a will-never-finish-in-my-lifetime list and I am always adding to it when someone raves about a book or series on GoodReads.

message 5: by Aastha (new)

Aastha (aasthap) | 190 comments I usually search the internet for the genres I want to read or ask some of my book-lover friends for recommendations.

message 6: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Frankel | 410 comments I check the Internet, and since I'm on facebook a lot--advertising my novels as well as helping out other authors--I get the chance to do swaps, find out about what's coming next...making friends with bloggers does help when getting suggestions.

message 7: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Burley | 29 comments I follow many bookstagrammers. When I see their photos or their captions, I then head over here to GoodReads to read the synopsis.

message 8: by s.shadereads (new)

s.shadereads I follow recommendations on here and also on Amazon.

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah At this point, mainly recommendations and what friends are reading here.
My TBR list here is ever growing!

message 10: by Kikijanika (new)

Kikijanika | 3055 comments Lately it's been mostly by spotting interesting looking books that friends are reading here. Also I have a friend who reads a lot of yA books and I've been borrowing books from her :)

message 11: by Jacqui (new)

Jacqui Stewart | 8 comments This is a great discussion. I'm a new author and have been trying to find out how to get my book out to readers.

message 12: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 11, 2016 06:53AM) (new)

I usually find out in ALL the ways, blogs, booktubers, bookhauls, booktags about underrated books, taking tips from fave authors, and honestly I love doing it the old fashioned way and just going to the store just browsing and discovering fun titles.
Also if an anthology includes new authors thats a way I discover new ones.
And by intertextuality, if a fave character of mine loves book a or b I will check it out.

message 13: by Trisha, lives on coffee (new)

Trisha | 30284 comments ha! I do the same things, mainly by friends and what they are reading (I also keep an eye on our Book Pool AND our Thread where everyone posts the book they just finished - I find a lot this way!)

but I also like to check what's coming out by using Goodreads List feature. Near the middle of each month, I check Goodreads list for the next month and new releases and there is almost always a list already ready for me

Like now, I would search for August New YA Releases and get that list!

I hope that helps!

ℓуηη_σƒ_νєℓαяιѕ | 789 comments Most of my books I find while browsing the bookstore on a monthly basis, and keep up with their newsletters to see what new books are hitting the shelves. I also watch my GR newsfeed closely to see what books my friends are all raving about. And then of course, when I'm looking at books that I've found through above means, GR always likes to show you similar books to what you're looking at. I've found some good ones that way, too :)

Ahh, yes the Book Pool! That's another great way I've found some books. I absolutely love that challenge :) And I thought I was the only one pulling books from the Thread on just read books lol

message 16: by Krista (new)

Krista | 1550 comments I find them in a lot of the same ways. The Book Pool which next month has several of my favorite that I just might have to reread! I also watch hailsinbookland on youtube. She posts videos about all kinds of books. :) Sometime I just go to the book store and look around, but for the most part I get my books from the library haha

message 17: by Driver (new)

Driver I work at a library, so that already helps. :-)

I don't actually find the Recommendations helpful on here at all. For example I'm reading a book in Norwegian at the moment and then I received all sorts of recommendation for books in Portuguese, Finnish and Russian - I don't even speak any of those languages. Another example is recommending the Bible to me because I'm reading a book about astrology, it's almost hard not to take that personal in some way, lol... Weird algorithms for sure... O_o

I find a lot of great stuff by checking out "Other Readers also enjoyed", scrolling through lists, participating in the neverending book quiz (to a lesser extent), checking out reviewers' shelves whenever I find reviews that I enjoyed, checking what authors I like read/review/recommend themselves or browsing through the Giveaways.

message 18: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) It's interesting to see the different ways all of you find books, but how do you find books by new or lesser-known authors that write interesting and wonderful stories but are having a hard time getting recognized?

message 19: by Jessie (Saffity) (new)

Jessie (Saffity) (saffity) This group is actually one of my best resources. Prior to that it was just what was popular on Tumblr or what my friends were reading.

Goodreads and more specifically Crazy for Young Adults shows me a lot of other great books by connecting me with people who have really extensive book lists.

message 20: by Hapsa (new)

Hapsa Firthous | 3 comments Booktubers give a lot of great recommendations so I highly recommend watching them.
I also look at amazon lists - the top fiction books people are buying.
The newspaper also gives best selling books at the end.
And bookshops!

message 21: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Hapsa and Jessie,
I wanted to look at this discussion because as a new author it is hard to get recognized-not only myself but my books, too. So, I want to ask-maybe more than ask-plead that someone give a read to "The Unintended: R u sure??" And if you do, please leave a review.

message 22: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Thanks to all those that read my last post referring to "The Unintended: R u sure??," and thank you to all those that went on to look at it and read it!

message 23: by Ilona (last edited Mar 29, 2017 09:58PM) (new)

Ilona (Ilona-s) | 213 comments A mix of lot of things. Since I haven't read a lot of SF and fantasy, I try to check the top lists or must-reads in these genres. I used to follow few blogs in YA too but they are too hyped for unreleased, so it can be quite frustrating to wait for the books for weeks and be disappointed.

There are also authors I follow, I check here the popular new releases and see their pages if the title/cover seem interesting, I also check the book pool daily challenge here and the bookshelf of a SF/F group. Or I just check books from different lists here.

I also got recommendations from my acquaintances.

Well the problem isn't really finding books to read, but to pick one. And also to be lucky to find one to really enjoy.

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Ilona wrote: "A mix of lot of things. Since I haven't read a lot of SF and fantasy, I try to check the top lists or must-reads in these genres. I used to follow few blogs in YA too but they are too hyped for unr..."
I agree, Ilona. It is difficult to find books that are really enjoyable despite all signals we use to ferret out which ones to read, whether it be the cover, the synopsis, reviews, etc.
I admit that I look at the cover first. How can anyone not? It's the first thing one sees. But the cover, even if not appealing, doesn't stop me from looking further. I then go and see if there are comments inside or on the back cover. But sometimes those mislead. Often reviews don't give much information. I have several books that are collecting dust because even though I felt they may be interesting after going through the process I mentioned above, the book does not appeal to me. I've even found that star ratings can be not helpful because many reviewers may read a book that may fall outside their preferred genre and then not give it a good rating even though it still is a good book.

message 25: by Kat (last edited Apr 14, 2017 10:28PM) (new)

Kat (sailercat) Hm! I love this topic! :D.

I typically find new books by frequently visiting my local bookstore or book stand at my local grocery store. I usually observe the new books section and the young adult section and if something catches my eye I make sure to take note and check it out.

I have been taking advantage of Goodreads these past few years by looking up authors, checking out suggestions/recommendations based on books I like and looking at the popular in this genre or just released in this genre section.

OH! I also watch a few Booktuber videos here and there for new books I want to read.

message 26: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Kat, Your answer is interesting. Do you also write? My problem is, as a relatively new author, generating an audience to try my books out. Would you be willing to read my latest book? A review would be appreciated, too, but that would be up to you.

message 27: by The Book Crusader (last edited Apr 18, 2017 06:26PM) (new)

The Book Crusader (thebookcrusader) | 14 comments In this order:

(1) Goodwill (I go to two stores regularly and seven other stores when I make monthly trips to Tennessee).
(2) Local non-profit thrift store (at the moment, they are offering five books for a dollar; I bought ten the other day).
(3) Libraries' for sale sections.
(4) Other thrift stores in the area.
(5) Salvation Army (also part of my monthly trips to Tennessee).
(6) Ebay and Amazon.
(7) Yard sales.
(8) Books-A-Million (to be honest, I haven't bought a book from them in a while; Goodwill has spoiled me).
(9) Ollie's (they had some hardback King books; no way I could pass those up).
(10) Dollar stores such as Dollar General and Dollar Tree.
(11) Non-chain used book stores.
(12) Walmart (only bought books from them twice—once because the book had just came out that day, and I was not about to wait for a used copy of: King Dork Approximately—to show up online).

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Book Crusader, Have you ever searched for interesting books on Smashwords?

The Book Crusader (thebookcrusader) | 14 comments JAKe wrote: "Book Crusader, Have you ever searched for interesting books on Smashwords?"

Can't say that I have.

message 30: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) They're one of the largest ebook distributors and cater a lot to indie authors.

message 31: by Siya (new)

Siya (siyak_) I watch quite a few BookTubers on Youtube and any books that sound good I search up on google and look at reviews to see if I want to buy it or not.

cali 𖡼.𖤣𖥧𖡼.𖤣𖥧 (calsreadingcorner) Through GR. Whether by email, news feed, author's updates...

Sometimes I'll see some in the library that catch my eye. Sometimes it's from booktubers.

message 33: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 132 comments Mostly through GR. The recommendations mostly work for me. And BookTuber videos. I sometimes just walk into the bookstore and pick up any book that sounds interesting.

message 34: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) How do you get readers to follow you as an author on GR?

MoodyReader2.0 (zjeena) | 11 comments *Evil side glance with smirk and rubbing hands* i just go to my best friends house...poor soul never knows what got her*smirks*

message 36: by Bailey (new)

Bailey Grimm I usually find them on Goodreads, through booktube a lot or friend suggestions.

message 37: by Lacey (new)

Lacey Friends recommendations, blogs if I’m actively searching for something specific, whatever takes my fancy on iBooks, Goodreads now and booktube

message 38: by Janice (new)

Janice Robertson (janrobertson) | 3 comments I love the Library Thing recommendations. Often learn of books that have not been talked to death.

Are the books you get from iBooks free?
