Thoughts on this book?

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments So happy this book was picked. I read it a couple of weeks ago and have been desperate for someone to talk to about it. Anyone read it or reading it?

It's been on my reading list for ages but I never got round to it. If I star it now would you comment it with me sort of buddy-read??:)

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments You should definitely read it. It would be great to discuss as you go.

Lucy (mesdupmoi) | 26 comments This is on my to-read for this year, so I will get to it as soon as I can. I am currently reading The Raven Boys, and then I will be reading the two that follow it. Shouldn't take me long to read them all, and then I will start with this :)

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments I've worked my way through them over the last couple of weeks. It really is a fantastic series. I can't believe the imagination Patrick Ness has. There is so much detail it actually feels kind of real. The highlights for me were the thoughts of the animals. I think if you could hear their thoughts that is exactly what you'd get. Manchee makes me smile so much :)

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments I'd managed to get the books from the library so the novellas were at the back which was great. They do add quite a lot to the story. There are definitely a lot of big themes and messages but thankfully they aren't forced on you if you know what I mean. It is a book and series that makes you think. I do kind of wonder what it would be like to know what people think. Sometimes I think it'd be good but most of the time I think it would drive you nuts.

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments What did you think of Todd and Viola? The Knife is the first book in a while which has had a boy as the main protagonist (I tend to go for strong female narrators). I really liked him though. He did annoy me a little at the start but definitely grew on me.

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments It was definitely a more realistic relationship than you get in most YA books. The insta love thing really bugs me sometimes so it was good to see a relationship develop. It seems to me particularly in the first book that Todd doesn't really know how to relate to a girl (although in fairness he's never met one before). I like that it's quite an innocent relationship and sweet rather than full on which considering they're only 13 or 14 is kinda cute.

Trisha I thought the plot line was very interesting, but I had a tough time with the narrative. I didn't like that the author was intentionally misspelling the words to try and reflect the character. It kinda drove me nuts and I felt like it took away from the plot line. I was much more interested in the story!

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments I've heard a lot of people say the same thing about the spelling but although it annoyed me at the start I did kind of get used to it.

I'm curious though about the noise. I had a physical book and really liked how noise was presented. Did anyone have an ebook as I'm wondering what it looks like?

message 12: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) I read this in the spring of 2013. I gave it 3 stars for originality of voice, but it was also that voice that made me cringe every time I picked up the book to read it. I don't know but I just couldn't say I liked it very much. I wanted to scream at the MC to shut up.
