Just finished reading the book and what struck me the moment I turned the last page was the feeling that this book is not ONLY about feminism.
I reckon that the book's aim and motif can be summed up by that unforgettable quote. Humans should be engaging with each other in a collaborative and collective way, learning that the commonality of our ideas, life experiences and beliefs is always a spring of richness for the soul and the mind.
It's evident that the book leans on rather strong feminst subject-matters, but the way Gloria puts them it's like she's trying to convey that only by putting the feminist battle on the same level of the quest for equal rights for every being -being them male, female, black, white or even a turtle - we can reach the goal of equality.
What do you think?

Jessica | 4 comments I totally agree. I found myself being more inspired as I read to seek equal rights, respect, collaboration etc with all, not just women. And I agree that I think this is her point. I honestly love that about Gloria. I feel her heart and true vision isn't inclusive to women but for all humanity. I also have come to realize, in my opinion, you can't fight for equal rights for one people group and not all. The term "equal rights" in and of itself says it all. I think having this big picture perspective is absolutely paramount to achieving true equality.

MeerderWörter | 2388 comments I totally agree. Only if we collaborate in a respectful way, allowing ourselves to embrace new ideas and dump old ones we can trily reach equality.

I knew before reading Gloria's book that one cannot fight for equality for one group. You fight for equality for everyone. But reading MLOTR has brought up that only more in my mind.

This quote also reminds me that "every human is equal." I think this is very important to remember. As Francesca Michielin said at the end of Italy's entry for ESC 2016: "We are precious, grazie."

And ranking is more likely to spread hatred and conflicts than ranking, in my opinion.

It is interesting that we seem to have lost our way. I see lot of literature about survival of the fittest and the domain trait in nature and how this leaks into culture prompting competition in even in inappropriate areas: I have seen lots of sales people having "art of war" by sun tzu and the prince by machiavelli on there office book shelves.

Yet nature is more about cooperation from the cells that make up all life, indeed the main cell organelles is in fact a separate creature call the mitochondria. And so it is with many higher life forms leading to people we are as much heard animals as hunters more so in fact.

John Donne put it best No man (or Woman) is an Island. Equality is the natural state for Humans when we achieve it maybe the tension that cause so many of our problems will lessen or even vanish.

MeerderWörter | 2388 comments Hey Ross!

You picked up evolution, so I will tell you something interesting: Sure, the survival of the fittest is one cause for evolution, but if living beings collaborate this can also lead to a better fitness.

Scientists think that mitochondria once were own living beings, and it was an advantage to fuse. Because the mitochondrial dna is very different from ours, furthermore it is only inherited through the mother. (It was a perfect means to find out how the continents were settled. Because this dna changes very slowly).

In an African community, I sadly can't remember the country, people who committed a crime are cast out of the tribe for a certain time. Forced to be alone is really a punishment for us hearding animals. When the time is over, they return and every person who knew them tells them whatever good they did in the world.( I don't know if that's proper English, since it's 11pm and I'm not native-English.)

Interesting it is also true that solitary confinement is used as punishment in prison. It would be good if we could move people away form the hunter and more to the gatherer in our societies.

It would be more in common with Gender Equality that obsession with competition that seems to dominate these days.
