i read this book and wrote a little dumb review that reveals nothing about the book. i read a lot so i forgot what happened and so far no one has written about the plot twist. it's bothering me that i can't remember what it was. If you know can you please let me know/??????????

his wife was dead and she was the same person as the teenager we were to believe he had an affair with - hope this helps. it has been while since I read it, too.
I think the wife wasn't dead, but had tried to commit suicide. The Headmaster actually lost his mind (was wandering around NYC naked, if you can recall). Because of his mental failings, his mind was telling him he was having an affair with a young student, when in fact, he was remembering about his youth with his wife. He'd not been nice, once, when he had his wife's ex-boyfriend thrown out of school, when they were all young. After his passing, she actually met up with her ex-boyfriend again. Does this help???
The headmaster did not die. His son did, in war. Headmaster just lost his mind and started reliving the sequences of his life when he was young and met his actual wife. She in turn tried to commit suicide but survived. I enjoyed the book.
