ZapRowsdower | 5 comments From what I can remember I read this book over 13 years ago, possibly more. Its a fantasy book where heroes must set out on a daring adventure to do...something...sorry that doesn't help.

Here's what I can remember from the first chapter:
Some people ride horses to a forest trying to get to the canter of it. At the middle of it lies a castle/manor but the forest is filled with horrible things that want to stop/eat them. They fight their way through to the castle, and then it all gets fuzzy memory-wise.

What I can recall with clarity is that the guy they are looking for is not the hero they want, it's the hero they need. He also has a sword that slowly freezes anyone who holds it, or feeds off of their fear, I cant recall which.

I do have more snippets of info from the book, but it's not nearly as comprehensive as that. Thanks again for the help! If we can find this one I have one that may pose more of a challenge...

ZapRowsdower | 5 comments Sadly, none of those are them, although it looks like I have a new list of books to read, so thanks!

Snippets are:
Scene where one of the characters needs to find something out, but the power used to "scry" it also opens a door and other creatures can come out. They are successful, and the warrior character defeats some some of the creatures that pop through.

Scene where the woman who runs an Inn wants them to heal her son, turns out he's addicted to some type of drug.

Scene where the hero (read: anti-hero), with the sword is imprisoned and being tortured, and every time he gets injured by searing fire he just heals again and is doomed to an eternity of this.

SPOILER ALERT!
At the end the heroes are ready to set sail on their next adventure. The gloomy anti hero with the cool sword hates water, but has been tricked by another character and now seeks retribution. The last part of the book is them trying not to laugh at him as he stumbles onto the boat. He remarks to them, "If any of you say anything about this, I'm sinking this boat and swimming back to shore."

OK there was a sequel to the book, so I reason that there were more than one in the series. That book starts with then getting to their destination, a jungle I think.

I don't recall recall anything more from the book, but as for the "feel" think "The Kingless Land" (aka, unlikely heroes, out for adventure), upbeat, adventurous, etc.

Thanks again! Also my list of things to read is such that there isn't really a hurry on this. More of an itch.

ZapRowsdower, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

Unspiritedaway | 39 comments This sounds like the Coldfire Trilogy by CS Friedman - books 1 & 2 specifically (Black Sun Rising and When True Night Falls)
