MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Oh!

About study books:

So, I've been thinking of what I'd like for study. How does this sound?

-Multiple Sections divided by (colored/writable) tabs
each section includes:
-20-30 college ruled sheets for notes
-monthly/weekly calendar
-pre-inserted page protectors for inserts(paper only)

The remaining parts (whole book, not separated by sections) would include:
- a pen loop/holder
- *maybe* a clear pouch with a slide close
- multiple ribbons for book marks (this could be deleted because flags)
- one of those rubber band thingys to keep closed

That sounds about right. However... I've decided to go back to using my old Day Planner Classic as a mini binder. I have a Franklin Covey Classic format hole punch so I can do my own pages and stuff.

Speaking of which - have you seen these? http://www.amazon.com/C-Line-Starter-... Same size as DP / Franklin Covey Classic pages, which is 5.5in x x8.5 (half-letter size), all the convenience and flexibility of a binder but with a smaller, easier to handle size. If you search "mini" in the binders category, Avery makes accessories and paper for them also.

If I hadn't decided to use my DPC, I'd go that route.

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I should be reading something. Especially since I have three books on my "currently reading" shelf. But I've been dogsitting for the past week and that always throws me off for some reason. Today was the last day, though, so hopefully I can find my balance again.

So I have a rant. (Been a few days, I was overdue for one.) There's a cultural-related scandal of sorts that has sprung up. The details aren't important to my rant, and would only distract from my point. Anyway, I was asked my opinion on it. I said, "Don't really have one."

OMG did I take shit for that. "How can you not have an opinion??? Do you actually think they were right to do that??" Insert more "you're part of the problem" nonsense.

WTF?? Did I not just say that I don't have an opinion? WHY is it that if I say I don't have an opinion on something, it's automatically assumed that I am defaulting to the "wrong" opinion?

Why do I have to form an opinion on everything that comes across my screen? Is it not better that I refrain from snap judgments and only spout opinions on things I've actually taken the time to look into? (Not that I make that a policy or anything, as we all know. I'm just sayin'.)

I mean, no one will accuse me of being short on opinions, I'll give you that, but I'm not literally Hitler for not giving sufficient brain space to this one particular thing today.

Damn it, people. I was having a great day and now I've been irritated.

End rant. I feel better now. Thanks. :D

But I'm glad you feel better. :)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I realized that the Alphabet Challenge made a lot more sense when I stopped factoring in articles (the, a, an, etc). Seems obvious in hindsight.

Anyway, another book on the list, another one in progress. Sort of.

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Finished a book last night. It was awesome but it's also the last currently available in a beloved series which made me sad.

Read a book today. Almost wasn't worth the time. :/ Just meh. And it didn't even count for anything on my SFE challenge. Was also a duplicate on the Alphabet challenge.

But hey. A book is a book.

LOL. Quite true, and I'd probably normally be the first to say that. In this case, it was more a way of saying, "Well, that was shit but at least I still get to count it as a book read this year." :D

MrsJoseph wrote: "No reading happys? :( "

Well, the one in the series that I love was a reading happy. It was like... visiting with a beloved friend, but then saying goodbye knowing you won't see them again till next year. It was a wonderful adventure with Eddie G. and Jerry, but I won't see them for a long time. (And lord, I hope Robert Randisi has the next book in the Rat Pack Mysteries well underway or I may end up writing my first ever fanmail and it won't be entirely sweet. I've ended up falling harder for these characters than I did for Harry Dresden, so that should give you an idea of how I feel about this.)

message 116: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments See, it does count for something. :)

My steampunk selection is pretty shallow. Probably the shallowest thing I've read in five years. Probably in the how-the-hell-did-I-finish-that category. But it's short and was free and I needed something to read on my phone. The excuse parade is a long one today.

WOW. But that's a good thing, though. Finding a new book/series that feels like that is always a winner in my book. I've been reading meh.

Had to look this one up. I'm a fan of pulp noir - I take it you recommend the series then? :P

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Orlok wrote: "Had to look this one up. I'm a fan of pulp noir - I take it you recommend the series then? :P"

Let me put it this way: It's not exactly literature, but I think it's a whole lotta fun. :D

For some reason, the 2nd book in the series was never made available as an ebook, so I haven't read that one, but I've read all the others.

message 120: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Since Robert Randisi has a lot of stuff in Kindle Unlimited, I've been reading some of his other stuff. So far I've read one in the Joe Keogh series (mysteries) , and I'm on the second in the Decker series (westerns). None of them pull me in like the Rat Pack Mysteries, but it's not costing me anything to read them and they go by pretty quick. Plus, it's gotten me into two genres I've not spent much time in before, so that's good.

None - and I mean none - so far count toward anything in the SFE challenge but I can't really bring myself to be bothered much by that. :D

message 121: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I updated all my crap. Realized I hadn't since I was in Florida, and since I just finished the door stopper, I got all caught up.

(Yeah, I just realized I can't use the word "swell" without sounding sarcastic. I really meant that it's awesome.)

And another book read, which was really good but also pissed me off for reasons that I can't explain without spoilers. So unless you've read Pines or watched Wayward Pines already, don't ask. :D

Well you say pitiful... A friend of my daughter was looking at our bookshelves a couple of days ago and said to me "Have you really read all these books?" "Most of them," I replied, looking at the few hundred there, the truth being that it's is a small fraction of the total books I have read. "Wow," she said, "I've only read 5 books in my whole life." What do you say to that?

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Orlok wrote: ""Wow," she said, "I've only read 5 books in my whole life." What do you say to that? "

That makes me sad. All of those worlds, people and stories out there, left unknown. :(

message 134: by Orlok (new)

Orlok | 555 comments Christa wrote: "That makes me sad. All of those worlds, people and stories out there, left unknown. :("

Exactly how I feel. As far as I know, my brother has only read one book, and that was the Hobbit. And I read it to him when he was a kid...

And just to underline what you say, he's an idiot, with very poor judgement regarding the "friends" he chooses and the life decisions he makes. Related? I think so.

message 135: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Based on my own experience with non-readers, I agree with you. Not all of them, to be sure, because some people expand their "reach" in other ways, but enough to see that there's something to that.

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I've decided to read only horror fiction from now till Halloween. Not holding myself to any number, but have put together a list of sorts to give myself some organization. (I also have some non-fiction going that won't be a part of that.)

Endurance
Haunted House
Blaze
It
The Housemates
The Cellar
Off Season
NOS4A2
The Woman

message 138: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Wow. So, like, I barely read any of those. LOL I read Endurance and started Haunted House, which I'm just now getting back to. Housemates is still on the TBR list, but I've got a book set in Nashville that I just started because it's by a favorite author and also because it fills a slot on my SFE challenge.

There's a month left. Not... giving... up... yet. :D

I finally got tired of reading on the Fire and added a Paperwhite to the collection. Wow. I'd forgotten how much I like frontlighted readers.

Never Give Up! Never Surrender!

I tried the Fire for a while too but went back to my beloved Paperwhite. The Fire was then gifted to my MIL who had recently lost her Nook to ebook reader haven.

I purchased a new (5th gen.) Fire when it was just offered for $33.33 and am reading on it using Cool Reader GL and am (so far) pleased with it. Though my main reader is still a Kindle Voyage which I really, really like a lot!! I have 2 previous PaperWhite models and replaced the last one with the Voyage when it was introduced. It has a hugely improved battery life compared to either of my PaperWhites!

P.S. Christa, get back over to the Butcher thread on Mobilread, Leanansidhe just showed back up and so should you.

message 141: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Updated with a few more books.

The Paperwhite and I are getting along really well. :) It's my favorite device yet for regular reading. Between that and my Fire HD 8, I've got pretty much everything covered.

I'm so glad that they added Alexa to the Fire. I always miss my Echo when I'm in Florida or housesitting, so it's nice to be able to take her with me on my Fire. :D

As for the Butcher thread, my interest is hibernating until the next DF release date is approaching.

I have an HDX 7, which is what I read on all the time. I am now toying with what to have for Christmas. It's between the Paperwhite, the Voyager and the Oasis. Good to hear you like the Paperwhite, as that's the most affordable of the 3. I'd like to try the Oasis, but the price seems ridiculous (£270 here in the UK, $342 at current conversion rates). And I'm not sure the Voyager is much better than the Paperwhite.

message 145: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments IDK if its worth it. I mean, can the tech be that much better? Esp when it seems everyone is putting their dollars in voice activated tech?

message 146: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Awesome. :) My mom got her first Fire a few years ago. Loved it, I upgraded her to a newer one for her Mother's Day present in 2015. Her old Fire still works and now belongs to my roommate.

My first Fire was a 2014 model that my cousin Penny gave me abotu the same time I bought my mom her current one. She bought it but got a free Galaxy tablet when she bought her phone soon after, so she didn't want the Fire. I bought the HD 8 at the beginning of this year, and passed along the 2014 to a friend.

I can certainly see why they're not everyone's first choice, and my initial reaction when they came out was "meh", but after last year's major UI change, I think they're amazing. :D

message 147: by Orlok (new)

Orlok | 555 comments I do like my Fire very much. My worry is the strain it puts on your eyes reading at night especially. And trying to read outside in the sunlight is almost impossible, so that's why I want an eInk reader as well.

message 148: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Yeah, I was never able to read on any tablet in full darkness, even turned way down. The Paperwhite is doing well in everything from bright ambient to full dark.

The frontlighting on the Paperwhite is pretty even. Or, even enough for me not to notice after I've started reading. I just can't imagine that the price difference for the Voyage and Oasis can really be worth it, honestly.

message 149: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I'm very happy with my paperwhite too, i don't think I'll be upgrading any time soon unless it breaks! :D

I treated myself to a Voyage after my Paperwhite developed a dreaded pinhole (probably my own fault). I prefer the Voyage. I thought it would be the page turn buttons, but though they are handy it isn't the main reason. I love the adaptive lighting, at first you have to teach it your preferences, but when it has learned them it's so nice that it adjusts the lighting. I also love that it has no bevel where dust and crumbs can gather. Finally I like how easy it is to remove the Voyage from the origami case. The magnets keep it in, I haven't had it pop out of it's casing on its own, but when you do want to read naked it'll just pop out.
