Such a nice surprise that it's free! Looking forward to reading this - somehow this is the second romance/mystery book involving cupcakes that I've added to my 'to-read' list today.... February is clearly about cupcakes.
I just wanted to give you a heads up. I just got Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic free on amazon.com.
Yay! I'm so excited that one of my suggestions was picked for the group! I loved this series, lightweight and super fun.
Okay, if you could design your own personal cupcake what flavor would it be and what would you call it?
-Did anyone in this family actually know where Sienna lived or were they just trusting she found a bed to rest in? In the beginning of the book Jade said she thought she was "currently bunking at Gran’s, being in between jobs. Which meant she was probably living full-time with Rusty" but a not too long later says "Sienna, who had a habit of living with me between boyfriends." Was it normal for her to just move in with boyfriends or lose her job constantly? Have they ever staged an intervention?-If you magic dance humped somebody and they showed up dead a little while after are you committed enough to kill their zombfied corpse? What fast beat song hump = I might love you?
-Cast the characters as cupcakes.
-How did you feel about Jade's lack of common sense? Personally, if I thought my magic wasn't strong I would have called my Gran as soon as heard a vampire was threatening to bite me. If I didn't call then maybe I would have after being accused of murder, or attacked.
How many giant cupcakes can you eat in one sitting without collapsing with early onset diabetes? Asking for a friend :) If you had a cheesy name that described your magic attunement What would is be? E.g. Pearl, Jade, sienna, rusty, Mr growly.
I certainly gobbled this book in less than a day and it was delicious! I enjoyed it so much that I just downloaded the second book and I will probably read all of the books in the series before the upcoming hangout.Questions for the show:
What do you think the portal is a gate to?
(I think it is heaven or afterlife or a place where love resides)
What do you think her fathers magical lineage is?
(For some reason I am thinking an angel?!?!?!)
What was so important going on with Grans coven meeting/vacation that prevented her from answering her damn phone???
(Maybe the second book will tell me...)
Stephanie wrote: "I certainly gobbled this book in less than a day and it was delicious! I enjoyed it so much that I just downloaded the second book and I will probably read all of the books in the series before the..."I think her father is a angel too, it would explain the portal thing a bit too.
The last sentiment of this book was quite possibly the worst I've ever read being along the lines of "he didn't want me for my talents, just my cupcakes and my body"So my question is .. What's the worst ending line you have ever read ?
What did you think of Jade having an actual job she had to show up for, even if she was the boss? Also what did you think of her having a successful business despite coming across as somewhat of an immature airhead? Do you think it was just all thanks to her otherworldly cupcakes?
I liked how each adept's magic had its own "flavor," or "scent." If you had your own magic, what do you think yours would be?I think mine would be something like fresh blueberries with lemon...or vanilla and almond oil....
You?

Pretty sure it was all thanks to her grandmother owning the property in which she worked and lived. She probably paid no rent on either of them. Jade may "run" a business, but she doesn't seem to shoulder really any of the burdens beyond the gag-inducing names of the cupcakes.

I will ditto this question as well to be asked in the hangout! I think mine would have floral notes like ylang ylang but also a hint of spice like clove, or cinnamon underneath.

If you had your own magic, what do you think yours would be?I love this question, I think mine would be something like fresh bread warm from the oven and hazelnut latte...it could just be because they are two of my favourite smells :-)
Did you have a favorite cupcake from the book, one you really wanted to try? Mine was Sunshine in a Cup, the lemon one.I started looking up recipes for lemon cupcakes when I read about that one.

I'm not a massive chocolate fan, so that was the one that stood out to me, too.
KaLee wrote: "-Did anyone in this family actually know where Sienna lived or were they just trusting she found a bed to rest in? In the beginning of the book Jade said she thought she was "currently bunking at G..."What about how naive she (Jade) acts. I knew almost immediately that her sis was the troublemaker.
If you haven't finished the book you don't want to read this one. I thought it was pretty good. I have a big problem with book series that try to force a love triangle so that was blessedly absent. For a romance book, it doesn't really push the romance. Who else liked that? Also, people seem to be debating what Jade's father was. I kind of thought it was revealed when the alchemist references were made near the end. Of course, I suppose that didn't have to mean she was an alchemist. She could be elven, since so many other stories drawn from old lore say that elves are the race that create magical objects. I am so making cupcakes when the discussion broadcasts.
I like how Jade is conveniently her own boss so she can have her adventures without getting fired. If you were in your own genre romance novel, what would be your no commitment, easily escapable job?
How quickly did you figure out who the "bad guy" was? What do you think Jade's other half is?
What do you think might be beyond the portal?
Also... what do you think about how naive Jade was? Drove me up the wall a few times, and I wanted to throw the book, especially near the end.
Jade has weird self esteem issues, she knows she can get any man to sleep with her but the minute Kettil and Desmond show interest in her she down plays it like they couldn't possibly want her as a person. Which one would you have taken home?
Although the cupcake ingredients are never mentioned to have magical qualities Jade often compares making trinkets to baking. She also mentioned that her cupcakes are always tastier than when anyone else bakes them. Do you think she's unknowingly creating/forming magic into her cupcakes?
Kett and Desmond are showing different types of potential. Kett as possibly a more long term, gentle thing (assuming he's recently fed), and Desmond more hot and rough. Any preferences for Jade's choice? (I admit that I've read reviews on the other books, but haven't picked up hints of either developing, so this is purely hypothetical).
Which mainstream song would put you in the mood to air-hump a pack of werewolves on the dance floor?
Kat wrote: "Which mainstream song would put you in the mood to air-hump a pack of werewolves on the dance floor?"Love this question Kat. :)
What did you think of the pacing of the story? Even though Jade encountered Kett almost immediately, I feel like nothing really happened until almost the final third of the book.
Okay did it bother anyone else that she wanted her magical books in electronic form? Maybe I've read too many fantasy books but my brain went "that would F with the magic silly witch." My question is -- are dusty magic books now fantasy cannon or can you make them electronic AND believable?
This is a chocolate chip cookie dough cupcake with cookie frosting and a cookie:
In case that description isn't clear, there is chocolate chip cookie dough inside that cupcake. Or, in other words: it is a cookie in a cupcake with a cookie on top. Clearly, an abomination against the Laws of Nature, and one of my personal drugs of choice.
Name your dessert. Name the thing you would give up in place of that dessert if you were forced by the gods to choose.
For Jade to be so smart book wise, as well as confident, etc., she sure is made out to be rather dense and vapid at times. Was anyone else bothered by this when she was turned into this type of character/female??
I've been looking around in the forums for a while and I can't find a time (including time zone) for tonight's discussion. Anyone? I'm probably just not seeing it.
Katana wrote: "Okay did it bother anyone else that she wanted her magical books in electronic form? Maybe I've read too many fantasy books but my brain went "that would F with the magic silly witch." I thought it would surely mess with the magic too (for plots sake). Still, you can find just about anything on Amazon for Kindle and even the old one provided decent graphics for illustrations (runes and what not?). I wouldn't be surprised to find some on the site IRL.
Jamie wrote: "I've been looking around in the forums for a while and I can't find a time (including time zone) for tonight's discussion. Anyone? I'm probably just not seeing it."Hi Jamie! The hangout will be at 7 PM West Coast US time (10 PM on the East Coast).

I hope she takes it somewhere else.

Was just looking for this info! Yay!
I was in need of a light read this month so this book was perfect for that - and free online as well FTW!My question: Why did Jade act so weird about the bus driver? She mentioned being appreciative that she did not have to chat with him - why would she assume this in the first place? This was a minor event but one that stuck with me thru the rest of the book.
Also, like others have posted: the nail polish bothered me as well!
Did anyone else think there was some sort of chemistry between Jade and Kett?It seemed that they had some sort of connection
Also, pretty sure this type of question has come up with prior books, but what would your magic smell like?
What did you think about the way the book was written? It seemed to be very basic to me, except near the end where the writer gets oddly formal (Jade & Sienna calling each other "sister"), which didn't fit the book at all.

First off, I would call this book fluff's fluff. It was a decent read if you keep that in mind. Here is my question though, because I kept drawing parallel's almost the entire length of the book. Did anyone feel this was emulating in any way the Southern Vampire Mysteries? I read a few people who thought it was angels or demons, but I couldn't help but be reminded time and time again of how other beings were drawn to Miss Stackhouse, and that easily could be a portal to Faerie.

I don't greet my friend as "Architect", why would you just refer to someone as "Witch"? I've just been rereading the Sookie Stackhouse books and they do it there too. Annoys me.
