Exactly who were these attackers and why did they attack?

Erin Germain (demiguise) I got the impression they were clans who don't give allegiance to any of the ruling houses. If you aren't one of them, you must be an enemy.

OK, so just trouble makers in general then. Thanks.

Erin Germain (demiguise) On the face of it, that's what I'd say. They probably will become more important, as the story goes on, since I doubt he wrote the scene simply to give Tyrion a chance to get a weapon back. It seems like a long way around to go for something that could be more easily accomplished, IMO.

Tyrion has always been the most honest/upfront so it's sad that no one believes him when it comes to Bran.
What's a hedge knight?
Catelyn is definitely one of the more religious characters we've met thus far.

I looked it up.

"Hedge knights are so named because most of their worldly wealth is in their arms and horses and they generally must sleep outdoors, under a hedge. Contrary to landed knights, hedge knights own no land.
Daenerys Targaryen recalls that her brother Viserys had told her of knights so poor that they had to sleep beneath the ancient hedges that grew along the byways of the Seven Kingdoms."
