Exactly who were these attackers and why did they attack?

I got the impression they were clans who don't give allegiance to any of the ruling houses. If you aren't one of them, you must be an enemy.

On the face of it, that's what I'd say. They probably will become more important, as the story goes on, since I doubt he wrote the scene simply to give Tyrion a chance to get a weapon back. It seems like a long way around to go for something that could be more easily accomplished, IMO.

Tyrion has always been the most honest/upfront so it's sad that no one believes him when it comes to Bran.
