Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I officially deleted my Shelfari account today. Since I've been using Goodreads and Shelfari concurrently, I had all my information here already. But, there were some things that I didn't have on Goodreads, so I updated my books spreadsheet over the last week.

It feels surreal to not have a Shelfari account anymore. I've been using it since 2007. I know that I won't even care at some point in the future. But, right now, I just feel so sad.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Oh my gosh, that is a brave step! I am checking in less and less but I figure that my profile will go off into the oblivion when the site is shut down.

I wonder if there is a benefit to deleting my account before the official shut down?

I effectively shut down my Leafmarks account yesterday since we will be housed on GR. I really would like to focus on one site and maybe get involved more here instead of spreading myself between two sites.

I don't know if there's a benefit to it, really. It was more just to help me move on if that makes sense.

Lisa (spirolim) | 178 comments I've been putting off deleting my account. There's just something so final about it.

I do like that most everything I use is now on one site, however. It makes it so much easier to keep of things.

Jenni Elyse, I like your style and I also just pulled my own plug from Shelfari. Something feels good about deleting my account on my own before they kill the site. So yes, what you said above makes total sense (to me). Onward!

Karin | 9250 comments All I can say is at the moment, and it could be this 6 day migraine I've had or something, but I am confused over this group shelf, getting my review on there, etc.

I am also confused as to why I already see reviews up for February's tag.

I noticed while shelving this weekend that at least one other of our members has deleted her account already, as well.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Karin, check out the FAQ to learn more about shelving books the the PBT group shelf, and I am happy to walk you through it later today if you like!

It is quite different from Shelfari (where members did no shelving and the wonderful Cindy took care of it all!) but once you get the hang of it, it is quite a convenient feature.

There is a learning curve and we do not expect everyone to know how to do everything right away!!

As for the February reviews, we set up the thread thinking we would not open PBT GR until Feb. 1 and some of the admins placed reviews for World War II books we recently finished to serve as examples when everyone came over.

Then, we opened the group a little early and a few other people went ahead and posted reviews of books they have finished even though it is not yet February.

It is just a little jumping the gun and the PBT admins are being lenient because everyone is learning the new site and trying new things. Next month will go back to the usual way of not posting the review folder for the monthly reads until the first of the month.

Sometimes, when moving, you have to be flexible and enjoy a couple of small perks to make the transition less painful!!!

message 9: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9300 comments Yeah, since we didn't plan to open until February 1st, we figured we'd be fine on the monthly tag thread.

But the early opening means we are pretending it is February right now! I'm kinda glad because there are so many good World War II books I want to get to . . .

Sarah | 195 comments Did anybody else have issues transfering their content from Shelfari to GR? I have around 1300 books on Shelfari and only about 250 were moved. I had to do the rest manually.

message 12: by Barbara M (new)

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2601 comments Sarah, I and quite a few others have had issues with GR transferring the shelves. I have over 2,500 books on my shelfari account between TBR and Read. GR said the transfer had been successful but they only moved 800 items! Of the 800 most are marked wrong between To Read and Read. I've had to go in and change them manually. Also it said it moved only 1 (one) review! It moved more than that but I have found a great number missing. (I had started to duplicate some things on GR a few years back but not consistently) I know this will all work out in the end but I'm hating this and missing Shelfari a lot.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8442 comments Well, I'm admin of a couple of groups on Shelfari, so I'm staying there until the bitter end.

Also, I think it helps if people who are having a good experience on GR (or Leafmarks or Library Thing) stick around on Shelfari to help other people who haven't made a decision yet on where to migrate.

Actually, now that my migraine is nearly gone, I got it very quickly. I cannot believe how "stupid" I can get with one of those, plus I was totally exhausted. It's just the same as adding a book to your own shelf, but you only do the ones for the monthly tag and whatever else we are allowing, but NOT the other books we read and post. I will go back and reread what we're to do with that (perhaps just reviews in a thread) now that my brain has rebooted.

DEEP CLEANSING BREATH ...."

I am laughing. If only that would clear it out. I did finally find the cause of it, since normally a migraine is a 72 hour event. The cause has been removed, so I should get far, far fewer again, I hope. The reason I'm laughing is because it turns out it was caused by something I was breathing in. My husband had to take some previously opened cans of polyurethane out of his van, and instead of putting them in between the top and bottom doors of our doghouse style basement entry, he had them on the stairs. When I finally found them, I picked one up and took a sniff. If you can smell it, it's off gassing and I could certainly smell it (plus it got much worse right then for a while).

I put them in a 2.5 gallon zip lock bag and then in the correct place.

And some groups there aren't moving until March 1, but most are moving now. I go back for a few things like that, but it's slow and sad over there now.

message 25: by Joi (new)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I took a look back at the past tags on Shelfari, and I specifically remembered 'social commentary' being the tag when I joined PBT originally.

Turns out that was 2011, January! Took a probably 4 year hiatus from the group, but it's nice and circular coming back exactly 5 years later, January 2016.

Anita Pomerantz | 9300 comments Brandy wrote: "Does anyone know if Goodreads will allow more than 1 reading goal?"

Hi Brandy,

I'm pretty sure it will only track the number of books, but you can readily set up other reading goals by utilizing your personal shelf. For example, I want to read all 100 of the PBT fiction list. So I as I read those books, I'm using a consistent tag (shelf) each time, so I can see how many of the 100 I have read with just a click.

Let me know if I can be helpful to you as you try to set up a particular goal.

message 28: by JudithAnn (new)

JudithAnn | 44 comments I'm devastated! But it seems I'm not the only one with problems! I moved my 1800 books over and got a message to say that 476 books had not been moved. I assume these are the ones that are not on Amazon - or not the right edition. Also Dutch books that I added by hand. And where are my reviews? And my wishlist is now part of the to-read shelf?

I'm not going to change anything. I think it's too much trouble. But I am mourning my lovely database of books and reviews called Shelfari.

I'm with you JudithAnn, I've lost lots of books and they transferred with the wrong designation - to read vs read plus many without reviews. I'm doing my best fix some of these things manually by going back and forth between Shelfari and GR with copy and paste. I hope to complete before Shelfari shuts down. I'm really being a fanatic about it - must be my librarian self!

message 30: by JudithAnn (new)

JudithAnn | 44 comments Barbara, there's one bit of light in the darkness, and that is that you can export your Shelfari shelves to CSV (so, an excel-type file). I did this, and it has a row for each book with all the information, including reviews. So, if you export to CSV now, you can be sure that you still have all the details on your books, even after Shelfari has shut down.

I'm in the midst of doing that, I think. I've saved it to my computer and trying to do an import but, last time, I got a message that GR took too long - huh? So I'll keep at it.

message 32: by JudithAnn (new)

JudithAnn | 44 comments Barbara, in Shelfari, I pressed a button to export to CSV, and a little later, I got an email with CSV files attached. But I didn't mean then importing that file to GR. I haven't tried that.

I did that also. Ever since then, for several days, I've tried importing it. Every time, I get this message "Goodreads request took too long. The latest request to the Goodreads servers took too long to respond. We have been notified of the issue and are looking into it." That certainly doesn't help much! Did that happen to you when, if, you tried to import?

Should I NOT add any more books to my shelf while I wait for the export?

I think it takes days to get your file! If you use GMail - it will end up in the Social or Updates. I missed it for at least a whole day when it finally did come in!

Importing that file to Goodreads will probably never work. I tried it numerous times and it consistently failed with that same error you are seeing.

Instead, I suggest that you compose an e-mail to <support at goodreads dot com>, attach your library.csv file, and ask them to please import it for you. It is unlikely to be a perfect import, but will probably get the bulk of your info onto GR - including your ratings and reviews.

I had about one thousand books to move from Shelfari and the support folks here managed to get about 950 of them into 'My Books'. Much better than the 155 the auto-importer managed!

HTH...

You have a good attitude. I'm attempting to copy my reviews onto Goodreads from the spreadsheet they so kindly provided. I'm up to the letter "M" in my list of books. It is taking forever. I'm somewhere between completely compulsive and letting it go, but obviously closer to compulsive.

It seemed to be working semi-decently until last night (Monday night), Anita. At least for me. Last night and today are really bad. I can't get in to the green EDIT button at all the past two days.

And posting to groups and note seems to work (eventually!), but it takes so long to post that I don't see it until I give up and come back later to see it posted multiple times because I didn't think it was working!

Thats kind of you to say, Anita. I've always paid my paperbacks forward when I was done with them and so its natural I'd comb through my ebooks in the same way. Letting it go came naturally. Some people write these stunning reviews, but if I can't manage to say what I want in a paragraph- well, that may or may not get finished either :)

Earlier today I found the proper help / contact us button and let them know what happened. I didn't ask them to import for me - that would have been a great idea. If I don't get the answer I want, I'll do as you suggest.

They SAY they will send an email ... aren't they doing that?

I have all my reviews here, because I've maintained parallel shelves since about 2008. But I want those multiple dates read from Shelfari that aren't in my GR data.
