Heroes and heroines

I would also like to add Jim Walker from The Last Recruit by Jeff Striker. Walker is the epitome of what a good soldier should be: brave, professional smart, loyal. He believes in right and wrong and doesn't agree with conspiracies or deception, and yet that is what he is thrust into when he signs up for a government research program that is not what it seems. I think what makes him a hero is how he is able to rise above all the deceit and twists because he is a good man who is loyal to his country, and he doesn't let all the events affecting him change who he is.

Heroes and heroines make the stories what they are. Sure, a great plot is obviously helpful, but let's focus on these fabulous characters for a bit.
What are some of the characteristics you think make a good hero or heroine?
Looking through our bookshelf, post a book and its author whose hero or heroine drew you in, and tell us why.
For example, I chose Charlene Mattson The Curious Case of Prince Charming and the second book in the series, The Glass Slipper Conspiracy because of Inspector William Tenys. A smart and funny character in a cleverly written fantasical comedy mystery. Have you read either of these books?
