An Assistant goes and meets an researcher and falls in love, but ends up with his best friend?!

Okay I've been searching for this book for a long time and can't remember the author or title. I read it in secondary school so the book could have been published between 1995-2000?! So a YA book..

The plot that I remember is there is a daredevil older lady and a researcher is trying to write a story about her (or something like that..) but sends her assistant to meet him. I think it was set somewhere in America, and she goes and meets him and they get together. But somewhere along the lines, she ends up with his best friend called Ant. The researcher is bitter and ends up with the older daredevil while the assistant and Ant go travelling at the end of the book..

This is all I remember! I know I loved the book and read if many times while at school but I can't remember what it was called! Can anyone help?
