Heroine's name is Catriona. She lives in Scotland - there's some Gaelic in the book. Has a childhood friend named Rory (MacDonald ??? - I'm not really sure), who everyone thought they would end up together, but they didn't.

I think I remember Catriona living on an island or near the coast, and she was from a poor/not well off family.

She travelled to the city (Edinburgh??) and stayed in a boarding house. Rory went to war, I think because Catriona didn't want to marry him. Time period is probably 1900's. Catriona and Rory's relationship as friends became shaky because of that.

Catriona used to work as a waitress in a cafe/restaurant. She lived above the cafe/restaurant. She earned money to send home for her siblings.

She opened up her own restaurant, in the cafe she used to work in. Then, when she had enough money, she bought a bigger place and opened up her restaurant there.

She had to take care of a child (not hers), Fionn. The child couldn't walk because of some feet abnormality. I think I remember someone (maybe the child) being diagnosed with tuberculosis (which was really bad during that time period). A doctor treated the child, and Catriona and the doctor started a relationship.

Towards Catriona's late 30's, she conceived twins with the doctor. This was towards the end of the book. Rory married someone else, and Catriona patched things up with him.

I think the book ended with Catriona going back to her home town, and walking on the beach while heavily pregnant.

I read this book around 2005. Can't remember the proper title or the author or year of publish.

Please help me find this book. I've gone through Google and BookFinder all to no success. This book is a wonderful read. Really captures the heroine (Catriona) growing up, learning to support herself and to accomplish her dreams.

Thank you!
Nadhirah

Possibly Greenyards? MC is Catriona, there's a doctor involved, and a pregnancy. Other details don't match. It's set in the 19th century. Here's a review:

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments Just looked it up in Wikipedia, plot points do not match, but timeline is interesting, and maybe this book might be of interest to you, I so far have not read it, but the first book, which I enjoyed a lot. The classic R L Stevenson: Kidnapped and Catriona.
Kidnapped
Kidnapped (David Balfour, #1) by Robert Louis Stevenson
which is also known as David Balfour and
Catriona
Catriona by Robert Lois Stevenson
or as two-for-one

As these books are out of copyright imho, there are quite a lot of different editions, and if you want to read an ebook, you will find it for free at project Gutenberg.org

Hi Lobstergirl,

I read the review of Greenyards, and it's definitely not the book I'm talking about.

But thank you so much for your help!

Hi Ingo,

Yeah the R.L.S. book came out quite a lot when I was searching for the book online, but it's not the book I'm talking about :(

But thanks anyway! I'll keep searching.

Amber (Daisymau) (daisymau) | 1912 comments This might be one of Stephanie Bartlett's Highland books. Just can't remember which one. Stephanie Bartlett

Nadhirah Alhabshi | 7 comments @Tab it’s set in more recent times, like WW1 or WW2 I’m not sure.. but trains and cars exist already. I was in Malaysia, and the book is in English

Nadhirah Alhabshi | 7 comments @Amber yea it’s not one of Stephanie Bartlett’s books.. it’s geared more towards fiction than romance or historical romance

Nadhirah ~~
You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 173 where fewer eyes will see it. Get back in the game! Bump!
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!
