Ok, so I have a wordpress.com site and I want to change the url for it, but I don't want to loose all the links that have been posted online (some are links I have posted on other sites which I can easily change, but some have been posted in my book and on other people's blogs as well and those aren't as easily changed) does anyone know a free way to have my old site redirect to the new one? i know that wordpress.org sites have options for this, but mine is a free wordpress.com site. Any suggestions?

Wisteria Kitsune (wisteriakitsune) Find ur .htaccess file & as a 301 permanent redirect, if u have access to the file system. If not, then u might check for a 301 redirect Wordpress plugin.

This write up seems to be the most straightforward, but I would check for the plugin w/ the best rating instead going w/the writer's recommendation right off the bat.

Note: this, of course means that u still have to keep ur old site for awhile.

Kat Wisteria, you're describing Wordpress.org plugins. As far as I know there is no plugin for the wordpress.com page that does what you describe.

Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org are two different things and do not work the same.

Samantha, what is the URL change you want to do?

If you merely wish to purchase a domain name, you can do that via wordpress.com's paid options and the old links will redirect to the new links automatically.

For example, oldname.wordpress.com/some-blogpost will redirect to www.newname.com/some-blogpost.

(This is because your oldname.wordpress.com is not deleted, but continues to operate in the background "unseen".)

Your new domain name does not have to be the same as your old wordpress handle, but I believe the options on domain endings are limited if registered via Wordpress.com. (I could not register a .de domain, but I could register a .com)

I want to go from samanthafischerblog.wordpress.com to samanthacfischer.wordpress.com. I think I'll have to wait until I can actually purchase a domain and then have everything switched over.

Kat There is a way to change your handle and keep all your posts - it's a bit complicated to find how to do it, but you definitely can.

I don't see a way to preserve the links you've posted/published elsewhere, though.

I think a domain name in their paid options is 18 Dollars for a year. It works as soon as it gets registered and it was absolutely hassle-free - you just continue doing what you did before :)

Yeah. I think next month when I get some extra money I'll just pay the $18 to get my own domain.

Actually after doing more research I think I'm gonna just switch completely to a Wordpress.org blog. That way I have my own domain and complete access to all the plugins and other stuff (which I can't get on Wordpress.con without paying a huge fee)

Kat Hehe, you'll love the freedom of all the stuff you can do with the .org installation :)

I hope so. Now I just have to convince my boyfriend that it's worth it.
