Here's a place we can help one another learn to navigate this new site.

For example:
Did you know that you can insert a link to a book or a cover easily into your reviews? Above the comment box in which you are typing you'll see add book/author
Click that link and a pop-up menu will appear. Type in the title of the book you want. If it's a common title you may have to choose the correct book. You can also click the other editions link under the ADD button to expand the editions of the book - especially helpful if you are looking for a particular cover image.
Click the large ADD button next to the edition you want and you get (for example):
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

If you want to add a COVER image ... on the same pop-up box, at the very bottom
ADD O link | O cover
It automatically defaults to "link" ... but if you click the cover box before you hit the ADD button you'll get:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling

If you have questions about how to do something, ask away.

Tanya D (tdrosebud) | 19 comments So I tried to create a new thread for my page count and a message popped up saying that I needed to verify my email. However I didn't see a place to do this. I'm obviously signed into GR. Can someone help me?

Hmmm ... I haven't come across that. I don't think we put any restrictions on the group, like over age 18 or anything that would require that kind of verification.

Did you hit "NEW" in the box at the top of the discussion threads?
That's how you create a new thread ... then it should open a new window
First it asks for TOPIC - that's the title of your thread - e.g. Tanya D's Page Count 2016
Then comes This topic is about ... just IGNORE that (if you were creating a discussion of a particular book this is where you would link to that book)
Then comes Folder - select PAGE COUNT TRACKING 2016
And then the comment box where you begin your thread.

Try again and let me know if it doesn't work.

That's what I was doing, and I just tried again. It just clears the boxes and a pink banner appears at the top of the page saying "Sorry, you must verify your email before posting a new topic." Any ideas would be helpful, I'm going to play around and see if I can figure out why it's doing that.

Also as far as I can see, you don't have anything saying it's adults only so I think don't think that is the problem.

I figured it out. I went into my profile settings and even though I was using an email address to sign in, that apparently wasn't good enough and they still had to send a verification link to my email which I then had to go and click on. It's fine now, I was able to post my topic.

I used to enter quite frequently, and won several, but have stopped entering. I've been getting RID of books as we look to down-size!

Sheila wrote: "How do you copy and paste now?"

Highlight what you want to copy (with your mouse, move cursor to one end of the section you want to copy, CLICK and hold it while you move the cursor to the opposite end of what you want to copy.

Once highlight - type CTRL C (for copy).

Then put cursor in the area you want to paste to and type CTRL V (to paste)

Hope that helps.

message 13: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 532 comments I've done that and I type before what I reply to shows. I cannot highlight anything or copy and paste since the new home page for Goodreads has gone live. Book Concierge wrote: "Sheila wrote: "How do you copy and paste now?"

Saw in another group that there are significant issues with phones and also with Internet Explorer. Some people reported issues with their tablets as well.

I use a PC and Firefox is my browser. I have not had any problems. People in the other group also reported that Google Chrome works without issue.

The tech team at GR is apparently aware of the issue, however, so there should be a fix coming. Here is a link to the Technical problems thread.

Dorian | 27 comments I am new to this group and I would like to start tracking the pages for 2017. How should I start tracking my books and pages for 2017? Can I still track for 2016?

HOW you do it is somewhat up to you, Dorian. Feel free to browse through the various threads started by members in the PAGE COUNT TRACKING folder.

If you'd like to go back and create a thread for tracking 2016 reads, feel free to do so.... but we probably won't go back and add your totals to the group totals for 2016.

You'll definitely be included with any tallies for 2017.

Oh ... you'll definitely want to start your own thread within the folder for tracking purposes.

Since 2017 just started, you might want to check some of the member threads in the 2016 folder for a better idea of how they kept track.

Goodreads is rolling out an “enhanced” service that really isn’t … Now, after you’ve marked a book as “read” you’ll get an annoying email letting you know all the ways to can further interact with others about this book.
For directions on how to opt out see this thread.

NOTE: this is a serial roll-out. They’re starting with just 5% of the members. You won’t be able to opt out until you receive that first email.

Click on the date/time stamp and that will give you a unique url for that post. Then you can bookmark it. Or you can copy/paste the url and save it in a word or excel document you use to track your progress.

Lela | 9 comments How do you add quotes? Shelfari had it where you just submit under a quotes section but it's hard to find here if there's no existing "highlights".

I'm not sure what you are asking. There is NO specific "quotes" area on a book's main page in Goodreads. GR focuses on the reviews. So,you could put any quotes in your review.

If you want them to be private ... there is a section in the review page where you can put private notes that will be visible only to you.

message 26: by Lela (new)

Lela | 9 comments Like this page for example: https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes...

That book's home page, scroll down and there they are: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...

The book I'm interested in doesn't have any highlights from other reader's ebooks, so there's no such section: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

Quotes are there. But for a new book that doesn't have anything you can't add one unless it was highlighted on a Kindle or something. I preordered the new Nicci French book and can't upload anything from a corporeal book obviously. I think it's a shame Goodreads doesn't have that option to add something manually rather than just have it downloaded and made public.

Okay ... I see what you are referring to (I never use this function)

I really don't know. There's a "quotes" field under the COMMUNITY section in the navigation bar ... but that doesn't seem to be tied to a specific book, but rather to the people who said whatever famous quote you want to save.

I'd suggest you go to the HELP section (at the very bottom of the page) and post your question there.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.
