Selene | 26 comments Hello Everyone,

I'm currently a high school student, and with preparations for university, numerous competitions I'm participating in (several of which requires large amounts of reading and research), and with school work added on top of that, I am having trouble finding time to read. I read around 2 hours a day every day, but currently I am reading three different books (including the on for Our Shared Shelf). I feel equal urgency for all these three books, and am feeling quite hopeless and overworked.

How do you find time to read? Many people out there, especially those who are adults with jobs, still seem to find time to read lots more than I do, which I find very admirable.

Thank you xx.

Danica | 2 comments 2 hours a day already sounds like you have dedicated a good chunk of time to reading in addition to your other responsibilities! For me, I read while I commute to and from work, during my lunch break, and before going to sleep. Each time may be very short, but it slowly adds up.

Danica | 2 comments One more thought…I also find it helpful to bring a book everywhere I go (when possible) because I never know when I'm going to be stuck in traffic, in line, waiting for a friend, etc. Reading can make that idle time more productive!

Natalie | 2 comments First of all, I know how you feel. Then end of my time in High School was extremely stressful and busy. What helped me was reading for pleasure and trying not to judge myself when I wasn't able to read as much as I wanted to. Second of all, setting aside two hours a day is awesome! Well done, seriously. Like others have posted, I also read in short bursts throughout the day when I have a moment to myself. I hope this helps and keep kicking ass!

Alice | 3 comments I know how you feel last year I was doing a postgraduate diploma and I barley read at all! Now I've got a full time job but I'm hoping to read as much as possible!!!

Maya Marouf | 8 comments You guys are so lucky to have time to read! I'm going out of my mind here!! I'm beginning to think that I won't make it to this month's book discussion :(
I'm a medical student and I have exams for a month from now. Some of you might suggest that I find at least 20 minutes to read every day which is a reasonable idea. But I can't do that. Once I start a book I cannot sit still until I've reached the acknowledgments! It's my curse. I'm also cursed with a terrible month of midterm exams. Please offer condolences and shoulder pats and/or a box of hazelnut chocolates x

Irene Díez (idiezart) | 5 comments Well, I wish Ihad two hours a day to read! I'm a veterinary student and I'm doing work experience at a farm as a vet sooo if I'm lucky I have like half an hour a day, between dinner (in Spain we have dinner at 21:00) and then going to study again.... So it's awesome that you can have some me time... Also it's the time to enjoy it!

I can relate so much to you hahahah I won't be able to finish it either by the end of the month because of my exams. Be brave and good luck!

Simon Kuhn | 223 comments Hi!

I think I pretty much know what you're talking about, although you seem to have a lot more work to do.
Sometimes I just can't find my time to read, and just like you, it's killing me: I have to read!
So that's why I sometimes have these day when I decide to only read and do nothing else. It's hard when you're in college but the next day, I start working hard for school again :)

Maybe it's not the best solution, but for me it really helps and still works out,
so why not give it a try?

Kristin | 14 comments When I was in high school, I read on the bus to and from school--my bus ride was 25~30 minutes, so that was about an hour right there! And then I'd read in the minutes before classes started, or if I finished an assignment early in class--although sometimes it's nice to socialize. :-) And after school I would usually unwind with a half hour or so of TV, but that's a great time to do leisure reading, too! Good luck!

message 12: by Jen (new)

Jen For me, it's all about dividing it up. I teach full-time, so I completely empathize with your time crunch.

Let's say I'm trying to read a 300 pg. book in a month -- much like you would for this book club. Over thirty days? No problem. That's only 10 pgs. per day!

Typically, I shoot for at least a chapter per sitting. Slow and steady wins the race. :)

Sam | 3 comments I work full time and have recently started a university degree part time. I understand the difficulties of finding the time to read books for pleasure, rather than textbooks or reading stuff for work. I do my reading for pleasure at night for about an hour in bed. I find it helps my brain wind down and helps me fall asleep. Though if I'm ready a really good book it can be hard to put down after only an hour of reading.

I'm exactly the same way! Very rarely do I not read a book in one sitting, unless it's not very attention-grabbing or it's a denser read (classics, typically). Or unless things keep interrupting me!

I'm a university student and I honestly have been pretty awful about reading lately, but while I was a senior in high school, I got back on the reading train and read a TON. So for me, I read while on the bus, during lunch, during breaks in class (and sometimes during class, oops!), like how a lot of people mentioned above. I also like reading before I go to bed because it's relaxing, but occasionally I'll find myself in a situation where I'm in the middle of an extremely engrossing read at like 3AM!

message 15: by Julia (new)

Julia Scherf | 18 comments That's a pretty common problem I think. It's the same for me. At some periods I read 2 or 3 books per week, at other times I finish only one in a whole month :(
2 hours a day are great and a lot of people will get jealous, but if it's not enough for you the only thing I could recommend is to always take a book with you wherever you go. As said before it can fill some otherwise wasted time (waiting for the bus etc.)
Keep rocking those 2 hours of quality-time.

Rachel Burke | 5 comments I read any spare chance I get, even if it is only a couple of pages. I've taken to reading on the go, in the school playground usually whilst picking up my children. I have to admit I wasn't overly looking forward to reading this book but it is providing a lot of food for thought lol.

Kayla | 14 comments I am also in High School. Usually I am able to find time to read. I just carry the book in my bag and just take it out when I get that opportunity. I am also lucky enough that I get a free block during my day so I can either read then or do my homework and read later. But
I think that 2 hours is a good amount of time to read during your day. Sometimes I can't fit in anytime to read. Especially the past week because this week we have midyear exams this week. So, I just read whenever I can find the spare time to.

Chloe Price | 3 comments I'm a university student, since being here I've juggled seven assignments with more coming up, plus homework and independent research! I completely understand how hard can be to find time to read, it sucks! I just read an hour before bed, better than nothing

message 19: by Maya (new)

Maya Marouf | 8 comments I noticed some of you have the same problem as me: You can't put an exciting book down. It becomes a tragedy when you have to quit reading in exam time or when you have more important work. Reading becomes a serious procastination issue!
SO if you can't organise you reading during exams try the following:
1. Read slow pace books like classics AND DON'T COME NEAR YA
2. Read short storieslike Sherlock Holmes (what I'm reading now) or novellas of your favorite YA series.
3. Buddy read with a slow reader.
4. Lock up you books in the attic.

Hope that was helpful x

Selene | 26 comments Hello everyone,

Thank you for your replies (: Feeling much braver about finding time to read now. I just feel really blessed that I am a fast reader; I discovered that I can finish a 300 page book in two school days. Definitely need to read as much as possible.

Happy reading everyone! Thank you for your responses.

Selene xx

Lauri (otwlauri) | 20 comments I am an extremely fast reader. I find now later in life that I only retain what I want to retain. I am also blessed (or cursed) with the ability to read several different books simultaneously. As a result I read between 5 to 12 books at a time. I can put them down & sometimes don't come back to a slow story until months later! I don't know why or how this happened. I swear I used to be normal. My favorite time to read is in bed in the morning. Always bring a book, because you just never know...
