It looks like Shelfari is done, I just went there and there is a page telling me that Shelfari and Goodreads are merging yada yada yada, completion date May 31, 2016, BUT, no way to access groups or shelves or anything like that.

message 202: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18927 comments It's not totally gone. I clicked on my name in the upper R corner, where it says "You are logged in as Eileen M," and it took me to a greatly modified version of my old home page. The tags are gone from the shelf and I can only view it in the form of my Reading Timeline...sniffle!

Bella, in my experience the right haircut can really bring out a person's hair color...

I don't own a kindle or any other electronic reading device.
I love books. The kind you have to crack open and turn the page, use a bookmark to keep the place you left off. The kind that does not need a battery.
PLEASE STOP SENDING ME KINDLE RELEASE DATES!

Ok done....carry on......

Oh yes I tried to log in on Shelfari and it what I could see took forever to load. "sigh" I feel like there is a death in the family.

We split up in 1982, I think. I was unable to see when he was listed on the database, but they said he was last seen in 2014. I'm not sure it's him because he's now a bald homeless-looking guy -- he was homeless when I met him but didn't, you know, look it. I've changed as much as he has.

Nope. And even if he did have a common name, this guy is the right age, the right height, same hair and eye color, and enough other features in common to make it very unlikely that I am looking at anyone but the same guy.

Ok, thanks. When I come here the left two-thirds of the screen is just blank and I forget there are things on the right hand side. I guess I've seen it before and forgot about it. Well, it says I'm 13 books ahead of schedule. Yayyy me.

message 217: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18927 comments It tells you a number and whether you are ahead of schedule? Shelfari did that for me, but here I just see "you have read 30 of 100 books for 2016."

On the left hand side there is an orange banner that says 2016 Reading challenge. Click on the banner then look for the tiny word 'edit' and click on that and you can set how many books you want to read this year. Then it will tell you how close you are to your goal and what percentage you have read this year, providing you are adding dates read to your books, which I'm sure you do.

Ok. I figured out why the left side of the screen is blank. It is suppose to have discussions there but there are no discussions so it is blank.I changed it so it shows updates instead. Now it looks better.

Fishface | 18927 comments Well, the Bad Movie Oscars last night were a total riot. Huge turnout this time and terrible, terrible, terrible movies to vote on. I usually come home with a list of movies I want to see from beginning to end, but this year I wrote down almost every movie they nominated. Word to the wise: the Worst Picture award this year went to THE ROLLERBLADE SEVEN, which I can best describe by saying it's a sort of hallucinatory first draft of both ROLLER BLADE and SIX-STRING SAMURAI, before the drugs wore off and the filmmakers separated their vision into a good movie (SAMURAI) and a terrible one (ROLLER BLADE). It's full of beautiful blonde and brunette women on skates, going through stylized martial-arts moves using samurai swords, knives, and even baseball bats -- in fact one of the beautiful blondes, armed with two baseball bats and wearing mime makeup, reminded me irresistibly of the Baseball Furies in THE WARRIORS. And then there's the guy in the top hat, playing the banjo while wearing a pantyhose mask and ski gloves, like a drug-fuelled hybrid of the characters Buddy and Death from (again) SIX-STRING SAMURAI. They only showed clips of the movies, not the whole thing, so I wouldn't be able to tell you the plot, but suffice to say I laughed until I coughed up some gobbets of lung tissue.

Other standouts:
THE EDITOR
THINGS
BLOODTHIRST 2: REVENGE OF THE CHUPACABRAS
BIRDEMIC 2
THE SUPER INFRAMAN

Shelley | 1225 comments The first ever IDCON (Investigation Discovery) will be held in New York on June 11th. Anyone planning on attending?

You can enter to win a trip for two:
http://www.investigationdiscovery.com...

"The event will be held June 11 in New York and will feature appearances by ID talent including Paula Zahn and Chris Hansen, as well as a virtual reality experience, a mock forensic lab and even a podcast station where attendees can gab away about their favorite horrific act of violence."

"Several years ago, Investigation Discovery viewers coined the term ‘ID Addicts’ to describe our greatest and most passionate fans — those, who truly love ID’s signature storytelling, to death,” said Henry Schleiff, group president for channels including ID, in a statement full of questionable murder-related puns.

He continued: “ID Addicts have only multiplied over the years and, in fact, they’ve made us the #1 network for women, so the time is ripe to finally give them what they’d kill for — an exclusive, full-day date with the talent and brand they just can’t ever get enough of.”

Very interesting that they are the #1 network for women. Does anyone have any words of wisdom to add to why that would be?

What a way to start a trip! Are you in a hard cast, soft cast or nether? If yes on any, how long must you ware it.
Good to hear you still had a great trip.

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1297 comments Thanks, folks. In answer, it is a hard splint, in other words it's soft in the front to allow for swelling. I just went to my US doctor and had it re-X-rayed and the Italy hard splint cut off. I was surprised at how swollen it still is, after eleven days, and how discolored - yuck! I was hoping for a walking cast, but was promptly re-interred in another hard splint due to the swelling and the instability of the fracture. Looks like another two weeks with no weight on it, but then hopefully a walking cast which will improve my mobility a lot. Not what I wanted to do, but at least there's a lot of art to see in Italy, if one can't hike.

"Have a nice trip, see you next fall..."

Shelley | 1225 comments That's too bad, K.A.! But it sounds like you enjoyed it anyway. How was the health service in Italy? Long wait?

message 239: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1297 comments Health service in Italy ran the gamut.

When I first fell on Palatine Hill we discovered that our only options were no aide at all, or call an ambulance. Having been an EMT for years, this was a bit shocking. I don't consider a broken ankle an emergency, so my brother and I were left to our own devices to get out of the site and to a taxi stand.

We were taken to an Urgent Care at a city hospital. This place was disgusting, but it might be similar to other inner-city facilities, I don't know. The bathroom was swimming in urine, no TP, no hand soap, no towels, no toilet seat, the door didn't stay shut. People were simply stacked up in a long hallway or a small room next to the bathroom. It was chaos and we were there for hours.

When I finally got X-rays, after about 6 hours, things began to get better. I was moved in a wheelchair to another place in the hallway which was quieter and less filthy. When the X-ray came back showing an actual break, things took another giant step forward. I was quickly transferred to orthopedic care, where a competent and friendly team took care of things efficiently in a clean area of the hospital. Things here were very modern, with electronic health records utilized.

The big thing was, I did not pay a dime for the 7+ hours and the care. I left with a cast very similar to the one my doctor here applied, and several sheets of paperwork for anyone who can read Italian.

Bit lesson: avoid the Urgent Care, but the actual specialists are fine, and free.

message 243: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18927 comments Well, my whole life you've not been considered a writer unless you were published by someone like Harper & Row or at least had a few magazine articles published. I do have the latter but the magazine went under, so where is my proof?

I would like to think that the dozens of short biographies I wrote in the CMH Intake Dept might count as actual writing. It takes considerable discipline to boil someone down that small.

I just went through the True Crime Trivia Quizzes and did some house keeping. First I created a new folder True Crime Trivia Answers. Then I went through all the threads and moved ones that had been answered to this folder. If you find any threads in the wrong folder, let me know and I will move it.

I am in the process of transferring questions from Shelfari to here. It is taking a while because there are a lot of questions. I am bringing all of them from the last two threads even the answered ones. I thought there might be some here who would like to read up on True Crime trivia. Again, if there are any duplicates, let me know so I can delete one.
