The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #1) by Lemony Snicket

GR Summary:
Dear Reader,

I'm sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

With all due respect,

Lemony Snicket

I am reading this for the 2016 Topic Discard Challenge #30 (a prequel to a series you are reading). While I do not consider this to be a true prequel, it seems like a good beginning to a series. I read this when I was much younger and wanted to revisit the series, especially now that Netflix is supposed to be turning it into a series. I loved the movie they made and how campy it was. I am interested to see if I still enjoy this series as much as I did as a child.

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments I finished this about a week ago. I really enjoyed the series as a child, and I enjoyed revisiting it as an adult. It's refreshing to read a book that is written for a young audience, with a simplistic style that is not dumbed down. I don't think I enjoyed this as much as I did as a child, but it is still good. 4/5

I'm torn if I'll continue reading on; I typically avoid rereads because I have so many books I want to get through, but it can be quiet delightful to reread the things of my childhood. Now that Netflix is making a series out of it starting NPH as the Count, I want to refresh myself on the complete story that isn't jumbled around ... I'm looking at you, movie with Jim Carey.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3282 comments I love this series! I've reread it several times over the years. I agree with Manda, I love that it was not "dumbed down" for younger readers and I really liked that it used unusual vocabulary.

Kimberly Costa (kimcosta) I'm reading this for week 12 since it is MY childhood classic

THIS!

In Brazil we call it "amor bandido" something like "thug love/bad love", it's when you are in love with a bad guy lol

Anyway, I can't wait to see how it ends!!! :O

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments Have you guys seen the new Netflix trailer for the show with NPH?

Janelle (wwwgoodreadscomjazzy_jan_1994) | 12 comments This is the second book I completed this year. I read it to complete Week 19: A New York Times best-seller. It was a reread for me and I enjoyed it - one of my goals for the year is to read the whole series. I am looking forward to reading The Reptile Room soon.

Nubia | 58 comments I'm reading this for "a book with illustrations"! I have high hopes!

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments We listened to this one today while driving around (the Tim Curry/full cast version) and it was great! We got hooked straight away l, and every time we got back into the car, the Spider asked immediately for me to put the book back on. I’ve heard the series just gets better, so I’m looking forward to listening to more!
