Sophie (BlameChocolate) *on hiatus* (blamechocolate) | 94 comments Doesn't have to be royalty, although that would be a bonus! (e.g. princess, queen)

Just a setting where the girl is at a more privileged level than her romantic interest (e.g. daughter of his boss/chief, richer, more educated, etc.) would be great. Can have drama, angst and all sorts of complicated situations for the lovebirds, of course.

More bonus points for non-contemporary/historical fiction!

Thank you for any suggestions :)

The first doesn't seem to be exactly what I had in mind, yet the second might be a bit closer. Thank you Joycedale! :)

Electric Bubbles (electricbubbles) | 56 comments Stranger at Stonewycke

Allison is next in the prestigious line of Ramseys, and she's determined to fill her role with all the pomp and splendor she can. The last thing she would want is to fall in love with a commoner.

This is one of my favorites, if you're into inspirational fiction.

This is fine as a standalone novel but The Heather Hills of Stonewycke actually begins a series before this one. It also has the same kind of idea if I remember correctly, rich girl, poor boy. Pretty sweet. ^_^

Teri-K | 305 comments OK, I had to come back to mention North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. This is the wonderful story of a well-bred young woman and a rich mill owner who came from nothing. The class differences are wonderfully done and if you like historical fiction, it's one of the best, I think.

Electric Bubbles (electricbubbles) | 56 comments I second that North and South suggestion. Wonderful movie as well.

Teri-K | 305 comments Also the series The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner has this theme but not in the first book in the series. (You do need to read these in order for them to make sense.)

Seems to head in the right direction :) Thank you very much Electric!

I've been wanting to read Persuasion for ages! Only watched the 2007 movie and really liked it.
The next two sound like what I'm looking for but not sure about much of a plot going on? The Proposal seems a little bit more structured.
I've been getting into Terry Pratchett recently so I'm delighted to find he's written something like this as well! It's bound to be great :)
Thank you tons for so many suggestions!

Electric wrote: "I second that North and South suggestion. Wonderful movie as well."

On my to-read list as well. I loved the movie! Richard Armitage is possibly the sexiest man alive (his voice!). Thank you :)

Anna wrote: "The Leopard Prince byElizabeth Hoyt
Beauty and the Blacksmith by Tessa Dare
A Crimson Frost byMarcia Lynn McClur..."</i>

I think the first two fit like a glove, except I would really love if there were other things going on besides the relationship.
But A Crimson Frost is definitely what I wanted, thank you very much Anna :)

These definitely sound interesting, although not sure if they are to my taste. But I will check them out! Thank you Lobstergirl :)

Sounds awesome! I love a good ole fantasy novel with a compelling story, especially one that makes me work at it. I've heard some people say the second book is actually better, so will have to see!

Teri-K | 305 comments Me, again. lol

I forgot to mention The Cater Street Hangman by Anne Perry, which is a wonderful historical mystery, the first in a series about Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. The subplot revolves around upper-class Charlotte and the policeman investigating the case. It's not a romance novel, and their relationship isn't the focus of the book, but it is addressed some. If you like a good plot in your novels this might please you.

ETA - I agree about Richard Armitage. :) It doesn't hurt that every time I read the book I hear his voice speaking. lol And the movie is close enough to the book that if you liked one you'll probably like the other.

His voice is incredible! He steals the scene in every movie I see him, I swear.

Thank you again for the suggestion! It's nice to have something that is not all romance once in a while... Sometimes it's just too much and gets too cheesy and implausible for me.

Thanks, Michelle, but I prefer the other way around :) If you think of something, let me know!

Teri-K | 305 comments The Proposition by Judith Ivory is proving to be better than I would have expected. He's a rat catcher and she's Lady Edwina. It's a reverse Pygmalion, as she's teaching him how to pass as a Viscount. The characters are more than stereotypes and I'm quite enjoying it.

If you like Steampunk you might like Kiss of Steel. He's a thief who runs the streets, she's a lady hiding out from the upper crust. It's my favorite in the series, though I enjoyed all of them.

The Jewel in the Crown has a relationship between an upper class white woman and a well-educated Indian man - he was educated in England, but once he goes to live in India he's a class below all the whites. Set in 1942. Both are in their 20s I think. This is one plot line among several in the book. Probably fair to say it's the main plot line, but you do have to read a lot about Raj India and other assorted characters along with the romance.

Teri-K | 305 comments I finally got my hands on Manners & Mutiny by Gail Carriger which reminded me that the Sophronia/Soap pairing is definitely upper class girl with lower class boy. It's not the focus in the series but their developing "friendship" is in all of the books in the Finishing School series. Another steampunk offering, though this one is definitely YA.

Washington Square. Heiress (not aristocratic but upper middle class) and suitor who doesn't seem to have a job. Girl's father is worried he is a gold-digger.

Thank you! This one feels especially angsty, what with the need to both please her father and still follow her heart :)

Thanks for the suggestion, Mrsbooks!
From this list I haven't actually read any so far but I've read some that I loved:
The Winner's Trilogy
Wuthering Heights
The Grisha Trilogy
The Queen of the Tearling
The Left Hand of God
I hope you enjoy them :)

Heather McC (heather-mcc) | 78 comments The Notebook (The Notebook, #1) by Nicholas Sparks

The Notebook continues to be one of my favorite adult fiction books of all time. Here we meet wellbred Allie and country gentleman Noah. Nothing could keep these two apart forever, not Allie's parents, WWII, or Allie's eventual mental deterioration can keep them apart. This is a love story for the ages.
