Ladyslott FYI - if you still haven't managed to get your reviews etc. transferred over the final merge date has been extended until May 31st.

Jane (sweetbabyjane) Wish mine transferred over properly. I lost all my ratings, reviews and all but 67 of my books. Had to add them. Didn't bother w/the ratings or the reviews. Not worth it.

Did you contact Goodreads for help? They have been quite successful at getting the import to work if you contact them directly.

Megalion | 23 comments I'm mostly done with a script that fixes most of the issues. Out of ~3000, only one won't fix correctly. Too many quotes in the title.

Now I'm working on reassembling the pieces into fields GR does use.

So irritating that Amazon couldn't put a person on doing what I'm doing. I've not coded in years so had to look up a lot but I'm only about 8 hrs in. The reassemble shouldn't take long. Just a matter of deciding what to do with what doesn't go straight across.

But I needed a break.

I mention it here because this morning i started over to make it handle the entire file at once instead of working it out piecemeal as i was yesterday

Too late now! Thanks anyway.

message 157: by Jerry-Book (new)

Jerry-Book | 25 comments It could happen. I would assume most Shelfarians have left for GR and Leafmarks but GR may want to pull in any stragglers.

Don't get your hopes up. It is highly unlikely that Amazon will keep the site going as it was clear from the moment that they bought the site that they were not going to invest resources in it.
The extension is probably to ensure that they get as many Shelfari users over to Goodreads as possible.

message 161: by Megalion (new)

Megalion | 23 comments I need some feedback... the script is finished for my needs since I used very little of the other fields. But want to try and include more if I'm going to set this out for others.

Here's what is done so far in the reassembling of data into GR's data structure.

1) I pass these directly over: ISBN, My Rating, date read, date added, Exclusive Shelf (read/to read/currently), purchase date, condition. Those are simple. I actually drop both Author fields and Titles because the one field in my file I couldn't resolve, was an issue in the title and I realized that GR has all that anyways, they just need the ISBN

2) Pass the review, I still need to have it go back and convert quotes/commas back as needed.

3) i pass Private Notes but then add in the details if any from Loaned related fields. I also pass "loaned" as a tag so it'll appear as a shelf.

4) I convert favorites and wishlist to tags to be shelves.

5) add "from-shelfari" tag. In case, some data doesn't make it after all and I'm looking for it. I'll know to scan the csv.

6) I check for if I've got a book in both "current" and "read" states as I do that to remind myself to write my thoughts on it. If both found, I add tag "needs-review" which is how I do it now anyways.

7) STILL NEED TO DO: check for multiple dates read, pick one to set in that field. Count them as GR has a "number of times read" field. Then probably add on to the Review field a line at the bottom for each other date read.

Is there really anything else to bother with?

Well the way GR imports work... you can run import as many times as you want and it'll add in any missing fields that are now present in the import file. Not sure about updating existing data though. Theoretically, this would find and fill in anything you missed manually, plus maybe pull over some data you didn't bother trying to copy over.

Just saying. ;)

I just went back to Shelfari this week and added all the books I read in February and March. Love my pretty shelf on Shelfari!

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments I might do the same thing. I hate to have my heart ripped open again when it is dismantled though.

message 166: by Olympia (new)

Olympia (oly366) | 4 comments I love my shelf on Shelfari also. I just wish I had more time to read, every time I sit down to read, something else is waiting to be done. I think I need to runaway from to home to read lol. I miss Shelfari, although I'm still adding the books I'm reading both here and there.

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 10 comments I'm almost finished getting the books that I've read all cleaned up with most of my reviews and tags and eliminated duplicates. Now to work on my "to read" and see if that's clean. I'm so thankful that Shelfari is still up. I did find something that looks like shelves on GR. When you go to My Books there are two display modes, one is list and the other is thumbnail. The thumbnail reminds me (very slightly) of the shelves.

That's what I use as well, Barbara. It's as close to looking like a shelf as we can get. :)

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 160 comments Thumbnail? My two choices are list and cover view. I'll have to go back and check that again.

- It is not Shelfari.
- It does not have a very deep book catalog.
- It is not based in the USA.
- It is not very active.
- It does have a wooden bookshelf.

It is www.anobii.com

message 173: by Laurie (new)

Laurie (laugal) since Shelfari is extending our run,I am copying my "discussions" in my own group so I do not lose the lists of books read from 2008 until 2015. Also working on a new book journal at home,it is taking on its own life.Enjoying working on it.

message 174: by Laurie (new)

Laurie (laugal) I have the thumbnail view of my books, not as good as shelfari, but will do.

Since we have the extension, I printed out all my reviews on Shelfari. At least I can add them to GR if I want, but I have them on paper.Bring up your "reviews", you will have to print each page, but there are several reviews on a page.

message 176: by Laurie (new)

Laurie (laugal) I had my books in list format with the covers, I discovered the setting for the shelf view, no shelf, but coves appear larger and looks more like Shelfari. Go to your "books" and click on the "4 tiles" in the upper right corner,it will switch over.

Thanks Laurie. I do like that better.

message 178: by Alison (new)

Alison (alisondd) I have so many duplicates with the transfer and they don't even come over in the right categories. Many of my books say read, where I have not read them yet. I have always put my reviews on amazon and I also made a folder on my pc with all of them.

message 179: by Megalion (new)

None of my books in this export or a previous download transferred over correctly. All came over as "read".Over time I have been trying to change it all, but it takes too much time.I spent the first 3 years at Shelfari building my shelves, etc. Now to start over again,is maddening.

I think this may have been in response to people getting their hopes up and starting to add books to their shelves again in case Amazon changed its mind about closing Shelfari.

The removal of the search is a clear message that that isn't going to happen.

it is extremely frustrating, I miss shelfari and its simplicity to use, here even when I change the location of a book it doesn't seem to go there. I am not sure what to do about that.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Alison wrote: "here even when I change the location of a book it doesn't seem to go there."

What do you mean by "change location"? Do you mean when you put it on a certain shelf?

yes lets say it say read, and I change it to to read, it still stays where it is in the read shelf.

I saw that this morning. I was going to look up a book and there was search bar. I thought May was when they were going to stop.

message 193: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments May is when they will complete the migration. Your shelf and data will be available until then. They made no other promises.

Seriously, everyone. You really need to make final preparations to get your data off of the site. The original date was March 16 and we got a reprieve. Make no other assumptions about the likelihood that Shelfari will come back or remain.

We've been warned.

"get your data off of the site" Is there a need to delete what was entered over the years?

message 195: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 286 comments No. Just make certain you've got it replicated somewhere else.

I tried to log on too so I could look up an author that does not come up on GR. No way to get started. I should just stay away from the site completely.
